Book Description

January 1, 2007 093807895X 978-0938078951
Poetry. "Patti White's new book, YELLOW JACKETS, is wildly ventriloquistic. Where else would you find sumo wrestlers, Izzy the cat, King Louis the Child, Jimmy Hoffa, the residents of Thicketty, South Carolina, couples at their burnt-out ends, and yellow jackets in one collection? All empathetically expressed, and without a single repeat. If you're bored with books about what the poet ate for breakfast, this one, with its refreshing lack of ego and its generously associated images is surely worth a look"--Lola Haskins.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Admirers of White's wonderfully varied and appealing Tackle Box (2002) may feel trepidatious when they see that the first poem in her new collection is called "The Sumo Poets." Has she gone all literary-insider on us? Fat chance! Instead of a critical fable, the poem is a celebration of the powers of the word, personified as two massive wrestlers grappling in verse forms rather than holds. Maintaining the wit of "The Sumo Poets" but adding poignance, next up is an elegiac sestina honoring the first dog in space, "Laika." Then come poems about lives scarred by crime and poverty; surrealist prose poems about the first flowers on "a struggling young planet" and "Jimmy Hoffa's Cement Sarcophagus"; poems rooted in old news stories and history; more surrealism, in verse this time, about weird journalism ("Denver Man Shot by Golden Retriever") and a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" tournament in Canada; and poems about flora and fauna of land and sea. And even two poems on paintings--always risky without accompanying reproductions--are smart, incisive, and perfectly pitched. Ray Olson
