One of the oldest metals to be fashioned into jewelry, yellow gold is a classic that will always be in fashion. It is alloyed (mixed with other metals) to make it harder and more affordable. Typically, this highly popular metal alloy is made up of 50% copper and 50% silver. With 14 karat yellow gold, the jewelry is composed of 58.3% gold (or 14 parts gold to 10 parts metal alloy).
About this Medal
The design of the Miraculous medal, also known as the Medal of Immaculate Conception, was first revealed in an apparition to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830. Catherine saw a figure of Mary standing on a globe with light streaming from her outstretched hands and a message framing the figure: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The vision then seemed to turn, revealing the back side of the medal: the letter M with a cross at its top, the sacred heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the immaculate heart of Mary pierced by a sword. These items were surrounded by 12 stars, which are said to be representative of the 12 apostles.
