Image of Frank Zappa

Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, Moving And Triumphant January 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD
As fans well know, Frank Zappa's music is, more often than not, akin to highly nutritional brain food, as were his ideas and discourse on so many topics- so smart, funny, charismatic!
His passing in 1993 was a dramatic loss to the world and he is intensely missed by many.
Although the body of recorded works he left behind is not only enormous, profoundly varied, often extraordinarily complex and exquisitely satisfying, it can still be a frustrating exercise to ponder what marvels he could be manifesting in our modern times; his genius applied to current technologies boggles the mind.

So, it is somewhat comforting and fitting that one of Frank's final major projects was to be the long desired realization of some of his last classical compositions and arrangements of some of his old songs being played by a faithful, enthusiastic and gifted orchestral ensemble- that being the German chamber ensemble, 'Ensemble Modern', and having them performed in a fine concert hall in front of a highly appreciative audience.
The occasion was the Frankfurt Festival and Frank Zappa was one of the four composers chosen for the event; Karlheinz Stockhausen, Alexander Knaifel and John Cage making up the other three.

After the galvanizing and high-spirited rehearsals (the booklet accompanying the disc contains some lovely and touching photos of Frank and Co. during these occasions) took place in L.A.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning work February 17, 2014

Frank's last hurrah was this live album of some of his classical works. I adore FZ's rock & roll/jazz fusion efforts, but I must tip my hat to FZ's classical works. A magical album when I'm in the mood for this!

3.0 out of 5 stars A very sad album August 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This was recorded on a European tour just before Zappa's death and relased just after. The picture on the cover looks like it was taken at Zappa's deathbed.
This CD was very popular on "classical-crossover" radio stations. It reached number 2 on the classic music charts. It won a Grammy award for music. Civilization Phaze III go the Grammy for packaging. The original version of Yellow Shark also had very nice packaging. I don't know if this newer version does or if it just comes in a jewel case.

This is another of Zappa's orchestral albums, where we plays his most complicated compositions with a small orchestra. I have to admit that I don't always get it. He doesn't just play his rock tunes with an orchestra. He greatly rearranges them so that they are more discordant. Alot of it sounds like woodwind and horn players going off and doing there own thing.

This is one of the better Zappa Orchestra albums. There are some great piano duets. Most of the tracks near the end of the CD really rock (in an orchestral sort of way). But many of the earlier tunes are rather sad and boring, to match the CD cover.

There is also a 15 minute performace art interlude, where there is talk of a future society where everything is broken and a section where a German reads a US immigration form. None of this is something would want to hear more than once. And it breaks up the musical flow of the album.

Zappa is still one of the most important artists in rock history, and I did enjoy some of his earlier orchestral forays, with Lumpy Gravy and Uncle Meat.

3.0 out of 5 stars mostly lame October 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm a huge fan of FZ most of the time but he definitely put out some tripe, possibly because he correctly thought that people were stupid enough to buy anything. This ain't no Roxy and Elsewhere or Just another band from LA. I have it in my collection now but don't know if I'll ever play it again.
