Best of the Pack,
By bjones@alum.dartmouth.org (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
There are a handful of guidebooks to Yellowstone waters, but this one has become my favorite. It is very well organized, and concise. There is at least a paragraph dedicated to every named piece of water in the park (and up to 6 pages for more important rivers). Accompanying the text are easily scannable icons representing the fish species in the water, type of access (car or hike), bear warnings, etc. Although I never trust hatch charts, the ones in this book are as good as you can expect. And who today could be better at suggesting flies for Yellowstone waters than Craig Mathews, the inventor of several of the most productive patterns used in the park today? I've seen Craig in the Park fishing several times, this man knows what he's doing. My only improvement would be for more detailed maps, but you should really have topos for any area you're going to hike into anyway. If you're headed to Yellowstone to fish for the first time, study this book & you'll improve your odds of having a great time. If you've fished the Park many times before and want ideas for new places to try, I can't think of a better way to find them than with this book and a good map.

THE book for fly-fishing Yellowstone....PERIOD!,
By Scott Billings (Hondo, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
Three years ago I bought this book from Craig Matthews at his store and everytime I go to Yellowstone I STILL use it. Of all the fly fishing books I have about where to fish this one is the best by far.Craig tells in DETAIL about no only WHERE the fish are, but what to use at that time of year and what fish are in the water. If you are planning on fishing in Yellowstone..then this is your book! Scott Cash Thompson

I call the book the bible for yellowstone.,
By Nathan J Conrad (Fort Dodge, IA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
This book is easy to use and extreamly useful. It splits the park up into four regions, tells you where (or not to) fish, and where to start looking in your flybox. I have used it the last 3 or 4 years and will use it as long as I vacation in Yellowstone. I have looked at several books on fishing in Yellowstone and this is by far the best that I have found.

The "Go to Book" on Fishing in the Park,
By
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
The "Go to Book" for fishing in the Park. Has all the information one needs to find "backcountry waters" as well as the "hotspots". I've fished Montanna for the last 7 years, but have never fished in the Park until last year. This book cut the learning curve by a considerable margin. Not only does he unleash his considerable knowledge of the "spots". He is very complete in informing the angler of the certain flies and times of the year to use them. I read this book practically every time I sit down to the flybench. Just to jog my memory on what to prepare for the coming trip. I wsih I had bought this years ago and fished the park alot earlier in my years. Could have cut alot of corners! Thanks Craig---great job!

A must have for the YNP fly fisherman,
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
Craig Matthews gives you great information and helps the reader pick and choose where to fish in YNP. With Matthews knowledge of the Park and insect activity it's hard to go wrong with this book. Great information on hatches, locations and whether the hike is worthwhile to take make this a great book. If you are planning on fishing YNP you need this book. I would also purchase his dvd on fishing Yellowstone National Park and on fishing the Madison.

Review of Yellowstone Fly Fishing Guide by Craig Matthews and Clayton Lolinero,
By
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
This guide provides very detailed information on the rivers, streams and lakes in Yellowstone National Park, the fly hatches and terrestrials found on each (by month of year) and the best patterns to fish with. It also shows which fishing areas can be accessed by car and which require a long hike. I found it invaluable for planning a fly fishing trip to Yellowstone.

Don't Leave Home Without It!,
By
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
A very logically organized guide covering the lakes and streams of Yellowstone. With this book as a guide and real-time input from local fly shops, you should be well positioned for success. The book will tell you where to fish, when to fish, and what patterns will likely be successful. A small investment for a potentially enormous return. Yellowstone Media Group Inc. has a great new DVD, "Fly Fishing Yellowstone Hatches - DVD, that is also excellent.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
Craig Mathews' brief but detailed writings for each water is just great and stating plain facts. It's simply fun to read. Also, his store "Blue Ribbon Flies" is probably the best in West Yellowstone. Fly-fishing guides are very experienced and the store has lots of fly-tying material in high grades. I also recommend to review Craig's other book "Fly Fishing the Madison". That's also well-written with his smooth and detailed explanation. SY

Good for basic stream location, very dated,
By
This review is from: The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide (Paperback)
This is a good book for providing basic information about stream location. It does a good job helping you to locate all of the various streams in the park, however as with any book it has become dated and there are some name changes that have been made in the park that are obviously not going to be documented in the book. As with any fly fishing the best way to get current information about what to fish with and what kinds of fish are in an area, is to stop by a couple of the local fly shops.
