Occasionally an album comes along that takes you back to where it all began. One that resonates and ignites your mind and spirit with why you why fell in love with music in first place. Michael Lee Firkins' latest album, "Yep!" is such an album. It is filled with so much good mojo that it boarders on ridiculous.

The opener "Golden Oldie" starts spinning its musical web and you can't help but get caught in it, happily, from the very moment you feel Firkins' magical guitar twist and twang. This is a sound that is not found idle hands, but rather in the subtle moves of a lifetime of soul shaping and string bending and searching. The vocals are a revelation! -- Rich, strong, bluesy and real! The harmonies are insanely great. But! the BIG Guns! and star of this record are the songs!!! A blend of words, images, melodies, harmonies, deep grooves, riffs, arrangements and solos perfectly percolated into a sublime soul's brew! This is a world class blues-rock record! A real rock record! ...Real rock-n-roll has been missing for a long time and Firkins is certainly doing his part to bring it back into kick-ass focus. -- Feelings of Leon Russell, Stevie Ray, Young Elton John, Skynard's Second Helping, The Eagles, and ZZ's Deguello mixed with the ass-kicking of early Aerosmith all come to mind and memory!

Every single song on Yep is really, really good and some are truly epic! -- In particular, "No More Angry Man" and "Last Call" are each over 7 minutes and feature some absolutely melt your face into the pavement guitar playing. And speaking of the guitar playing, one can't do a review of a Firkins album without mentioning the irrefutable fact that Michael Lee Firkins is one of the all-time great guitar players.

I have all of Firkins' earlier albums and have long considered him one of the great "unknowns" in American music, one of those truly exceptional musicians who haven't garnered the level of acclaim they deserve. Since I heard him play some songs off this album a year ago, I have been anxiously awaiting its release. Knowing what he is capable of turning out, my expectations were sky high. He blew those expectations out of the water. This is one of those once-in-a-decade albums that make your jaw drop from the opening notes..........and it just drops farther with each track.
He released a video of the opening track, Golden Oldie Jam, a couple of weeks ago, so I had an idea what to expect. Or at least I thought I did. Track #2, Cajun Boogie, instantly feels like a blues/rock classic you've jammed to for years and puts a grin on your face that's there for the duration. About the time you're thinking, "It can't ALL be this good...can it?", track #3, No More Angry Man, kicks in and you start to realize just how AMAZINGLY butt kickin good this album is!
There is not a bad song on the disc, but the two I mentioned plus Take Me Back, and Last Call are perhaps the best of a great bunch.
As you listen, you'll think this sounds like...... but you can't quite nail it down. Ghosts of Skynyrd, the Reverend Willy G, Stevie Ray, Bonamassa, and many others will slip by, but this is 100%, pure D, Michael Lee Firkins. After this, blues & rock fans will be comparing other players to HIM.

Yup is one of those Albums you grab when you want to listen to something where you love every song, the "Road Trip" music,The "Take Me Back" Songs...this is a Classic before it's become a Classic...Firkin's has put his best foot forward here, Mike takes us back to the Gritty, Groove he gave us with his first cd but has added a soulful, more Blues based twist to this one....From the down Home feel of Golden Oldie Jam to the Southern Twang of Standing Ovation you can hear the Feeling in every cord and note.
Every tune on this new offering could have been the title track.
Do your ears and soul a favor and purchase this cd....You will not regret it!!!
Amazing.....
