4.0 out of 5 stars Blow some extra dough.
As a casual fan I've been waiting on a collection for years, I just wasn't waiting for a 37 track 2-disc one. I assume many like myself would have been fine with a simple 18 track best of, but hey. However, this generous fan-selected anthology should include everything most fans are looking for. The big hits, the minor ones, and album cuts. Favorites are "Grace, Too",...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Collection, But Lacking
This is a very good and comprehensive collection from the Tragically Hip spanning their 20 year history. The problem I have is- where is the gems, the unreleased tracks that are growing mold in the Hip's vaults for years and years? There are untold numbers of completed tracks, demos, and radio performances dating back to their first record that have all been left to...

Favorites are "Grace, Too", "Ahead By A Century", "Gift SHop", "Fully Completely", and of course "Courage". There's many I didn't know here as well, but upon a few listens they all hold up, and overall I'm impressed. The only track that comes to mind I miss is "Springtime In Vienna". Otherwise it's the collection that they and we deserve. Basically as it says, it's alot of "Yer Favourites".

5.0 out of 5 stars It Delivers The Goods!, January 24, 2006
This review is from: Yer Favourites (Audio CD)
Like one other reviewer said, "as a casually fan I've been waiting for this" and here it is.

As a person who listens to the radio/cd's on a daily basis, every time I heard a Tragically Hip tune I would appreciate it for what it was, a pretty decent song! However I was never really excited enough about them to go and buy all their cd's. Well now I have all I want from them and more. It has all the radio friendly tunes plus a few others that may not have been spun as much but are as good or better. The package itself is nothing special, somewhat boring really, no pics or storyline about the Canadian band. However their is enough involved to keep you interested and the tunes chosen are excellent and that in the end is why I am here!!

They are many other bands who are better, however these Canadian lads have their own sound and vibe going and anyone who has seen them live will know what I'm talking about.

Good collection that was worth waiting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stellar Career Package, January 10, 2006

Every band with any type of a recording career eventually gets the greatest hits treatment. Normally these packages come across as lame cash grabs that seem to be pointless for long-time followers. Many times I have seen songs included that I don't remember as hits for the artist and album favourites never make the grade even though they might be more liked then some of the singles.

Yer Favourites by the Tragically Hip had the same feel for me when it was first released and as someone who had spent much hard earned income on many Tragically Hip records and concerts, I did not anticipate purchasing this collection. So why then did I and why am I now giving it five-stars? (If you check out my page I am proud to say I do not drool over every item I review for Amazon).

The reason for the high praise is that after one look and listen Yer Favourites is revealed not to be some pre-packaged cash grab to throw a few more bucks Gordie and company's way (although I am sure it will). Instead, this collection is an honest representation of the highlights of the Hip's recording career.

The story goes that the Hip let their fans chose the songs via an online poll, hence the name. The resulting collection contains the tunes that best represent the Hip to its fans, not to the record company. Songs such as Greasy Jungle, Silver Jet and It Can't Be Nashville Every Night are not included in the package despite the fact each had videos made for them. Album cuts such as Escape Is At Hand For The Traveling Man are included, which was a total surprise for me when first checking the track listings.

Also, the Hip's less then stellar recent album sales in Canada actually aid the package, as tunes from In Between Evolution, In Violet Light and Music & Work do not suffer from massive over exposure on Canadian radio. As a result there is a nice mix of fresh tunes (new song No Threat, recent single from last album Vaccination Scar), Canadian classics (Little Bones, Blow At High Dough) and friendly reminders of great tunes that are a just a little bit removed from classic status (Scared, Fireworks).

Therefore, if you are a true and blue Hip fan don't view this album as a greatest hits collection, instead think of it as the best collection of Hip songs every made available on CD. For a new listener I would also advise giving this a go as every song on this collection passes with flying colours even if you have to pay some cash to get it.

Another great band overlooked in the U.S . A great place to start if you don't have any of their cds. Just great straight ahead rock and roll thats just a little off center by the lead singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the band, for the Fans., December 22, 2005
This review is from: Yer Favourites (Audio CD)
This record is a definitive collection for long time fans and new ones, as well. The tracks span a career of many years and several albums.I do prefer the older remastered songs. Usually, "remastered" best of's, is a sales gimmick, but in the TH's case, the tracks from "The Tragically Hip, Up to Here, Road Apples, Fully Completely, and Day for Night", are excellent and sound almost new, but not too much so. As a true fan, this collection is a must have. Like a previous reveiwer stated it's definitely worth the money, or if you pardon the pun, "Blow at High Dough," sums it up perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do yerself a favor, August 29, 2006

I already owned every Hip album, but I got this CD as part of the box set with the DVDs. To my surprise, it's not the DVDs I enjoy most but this 2-disc CD set. They did a stellar job picking songs and organizing them to flow well from one to the next.
If you've never heard the Hip, you're missing out on a fantastic experience. These guys can rock as hard as anyone or hit you with a pop tune you can't get out of your head. The lyrics range from the brilliant to the bizarre, but that's part of the Hip's allure. They're NEVER boring. Who else would sing about sled dogs, hockey players, kicking someone out of a lifeboat, imprisoned virgins, and a stripper who stops in a coughing fit? "Close. But that's not why. I'm so hard done by."

5.0 out of 5 stars Yer Favorites? Pretty Much!, November 17, 2005

This review is from: Yer Favourites (Audio CD)
Here it is - a long time coming. Finally a collection from Canada's most loved band - The Tragically Hip. Note it's not a "greatest hits", "singles" or "best of" collection - but a selection voted on by the fans. Some songs are missing but generally you'll find every single one of those Tragically Hip songs that we all know and love, and even a couple that don't get played much (at least around my house), that are nice to be reminded of again.

And, the remastering/remixing is amazing. Alot of older songs, particularly those from Fully Completely sound MUCH better than on the original releases.

In other words if you're a long time fan or just discovering the band, I really recommend this (the box set for the die-hard and this for the newbie).

Okay, so inevitably with any collection from an artist, some major songs are always left out (can't anyone get it right - once?) - and yes this 2 disc set is missing some major Hip classics. Songs like 'Springtime in Vienna', 'Last American Exit', 'The Luxury', 'Silver Jet', and 'Something On', should have made this collection - I can't see how they couldn't have gotten voted in. (especially in lieu of the new songs - which are okay, but nothing great). Of course other fans will have other favorites left off too. There are a couple of odd inclusions, like 'Fireworks' and 'Boots or Hearts' that could be bumped to make room. It is tough though to put 18 years and 11 albums and squeeze it onto 2 cds. So I'll just say that regardless of what was missed, what is here is awesome.

This easily gets 5 stars. If you can afford it, grab the box set (Hipeponymous) while you're at it and get these two discs, along with 2 DVDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a weak track, May 12, 2007

Had Fully Completely, Phantom Power, and Music@Work in mothballs for the last couple of years, and until listening to this, forgot how much I missed the Hip's sound. Think comfort rock with obscure lyrics. This is a stellar collection which spans their early more traditional sound and later experimental leanings. Perfect sequencing too.
