Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.ca

Twenty four years ago, a young Vancouver band started out making music as rebellious, indie rock boys. Fast forward to 2005: 54-40 are now rebelling against major labels by putting out their first indie record since their earliest days. Over the last quarter-decade, the group has enjoyed critical and popular success with hits such as "One Gun", "I Go Blind," and "Baby Ran". They’ve also remained lyrically astute and politically active throughout their career, taking on issues from war to spousal abuse and beyond. Yes To Everything contains the same melodic elements that fans love, although the band itself has changed; longtime guitarist Phil Comparelli has departed and the gap has been aptly filled by ex-Matthew Good guitarist Dave Genn, who pumps up the rock throughout the disc. As a result, tracks like the opener "Easy To Love" and "Another Kiss" come with anthemic guitar riffs perfect for a fist-raising, sing-along live performance. Frontman Neil Osborne continues to create lovely, languid melodies, and on the slower side of things "This Is Here, This Is Now"'s Buddhist-inspired lyrics and "On The Road Home" --a disc highlight--proves to be a beautiful closing melody, the perfect soundtrack to a summertime road trip. Twenty-plus years and twelve discs in, Yes To Everything contains no dramatic musical changes, just more of the same great melodic hits that 54-40 has been known and loved for since their earliest days. --Denise Sheppard

2.0 out of 5 stars Songs sounded better live than on CD, September 17, 2005

Living in the Buffalo area, 54-40 has performed many times in what has become their home away from home, and they have consistently been a great and energetic live act to see. The last show that they played here was free, and they showcased more than a half-dozen songs off of their newest disc, all of which sounded great and made me anticipate hearing what I believed would be their strongest disc in years. For some reason, the studio versions of what sounded so promising live do not transcend well on disc. The CD itself is very straight-forward and rather "lost and lazy". There is certainly nothing new here, and many songs resemble past hits that were done way way better in their original form. Perhaps it takes a few listens to have it grow on you, but as it is now, I would have to say that there is not one song that holds a candle to previous 54-40 staples, like "Casual Viewing", "Since When", and "One Gun".

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth what it cost, July 18, 2006
By
This review is from: Yes to Everything [IMPORT] (Audio CD)
This is a pretty good CD only because of "Easy To Love". I don't think the CD is worth $28.00 and some odd cents for one song. All the other songs sound the same.
