This review is from: No No Yes Yes (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
All of Leslie Patricelli's board books are primers on how to behave. Call them required reading for "Toddler 101." No No Yes Yes is no exception. The baby that appears on every page has a big happy face, a single curl and wears only a diaper. It doesn't matter if it's a boy or a girl. On each page the baby is doing an activity. On the left side it's a No, No activity like eating dog food or putting toys in the toilet, on the right side it's a corresponding Yes, Yes activity like eating a banana or using the potty for its intended use. It's a very clear message to young kids on what to do and what not to do. Kids and parents alike will enjoy the humor. The cat's face and RROWR above its head when baby pulls its tail are perfect. On the page where baby marks on the walls, notice the sleeping dog also has purple and red marks on his fur, and baby's belly has a purple mark, too. With painted acrylic artwork, bold black outlines and colorful backgrounds, the simple presentation is perfect for its audience. The other board books in the Patricelli canon are Baby Happy Baby Sad, Big Little, Binky, Blankie, Dummy, Quiet Loud and Yummy Yucky.

Great for toddlers,

My 14 month old loves this book. She does all of the things the baby in the book does (minus the scissors, but she would of she could). She looks at the pictures on the no no and then the yes yes page with a very studious expression. I can only imagine what she is thinking! The illustrations are great for pointing, labeling, and discussing. The book is obviously geared towards toddlers, but its simplicity lends itself well to teaching preschool children, especially children with special needs, social expectations.

"no nos" are exciting!,
By
This review is from: No No Yes Yes (Hardcover)
I started noticing that the baby gives BIG open-mouthed smiles while doing the naughty activities, and a smaller, closed mouth smile while doing the approved activities. So, like the dork that I am, I counted up the big, wide open-mouthed smiles: 9 of them for no-nos and only 2 for yes-yeses (both of them on the last page titled "more yes yes things.") I can't say for certain, but I THINK that sends a sort of confusing message: don't do the no-nos, even though they're WAY FUN.

A great way of showing toddler what they can and can not do.,

This is just a fantastic book to teach toddlers good and bad behaviors. My daughter gets in trouble for the same misbehavings. Every night when I read to her this book I just point the picture to her and ask her if it's a "no, no" or "yes, yes". She knows the answer by looking at the pictures. I ask her if it's something that she does as well; she nods and buries her face in her hands which is just so cute. Through repeatedly reading the book I think she is beginning to realize the "no, no". The other day as she was taking a bath, I caught her taking a toy cup filled with water and pour it on to the bathroom floor; our eyes met and she innocently said, "no, no?"

Great book, but watch out for "new" ideas of how to misbehave,

We've been "reading" this book with our daughter since she was probably 8 months old (she is now 2 1/2). Each set of facing pages has a "No No" activity and a "Yes Yes" activity. We have always talked about what the baby is doing; as our daughter has matured, we also talk about _why_ things are "no no" or "yes yes" - and what happens if she does a "no no" (pulling the cat's tail, cutting hair with scissors, drawing on the wall, etc.)Much like Curious George, this book CAN give your child new ideas for how to misbehave. BUT it can also be a great tool to help curb destructive behavior before it starts. We love the simplicity of the book. It's easy for even a pre-verbal child to understand.

No No Yes Yes,
This review is from: No No Yes Yes (Hardcover)
Ahgoo Review absolutely adores this book. It is the perfect learning tool for children on the first rights and wrongs of their lives. The book shows children how to eat their food properly, how not to eat dog food and how to be nice to their pets. There are many more lessons to be learned and they are taught in a very fun way. After seeing several one year olds react to this book with big smiles on their faces Ahgoo has to give it a high rating. This book is recommended for children ages 1 to 3. The Ahgoo Review rating is 5 out of 5. ahgooreview.blogspot.com

1 yr old loves it - taught her "no no",

My 1 year old daughter received this book for her birthday last month and loves to read it. She quickly caught on to the "No no" concept and actually started applying it to real life. I made a "No no" sign to tape to the dishwasher so she would quit pushing buttons. She now will point to something (that we've told her not to touch in the past) and ask "No no?" I'm amazed to watch her moral conscience develop at such a young age.

This is a very funny book - showing on each page spread the No, No (scribbling on the wall), and then the Yes, Yes (drawing on a piece of paper). From a very early age, parents and children will enjoy reading this book. The drawings are simple and full of silly situations, like eating dog food or floating bath toys in the toilet, that make even older children laugh out loud. The repetition will help young children want to read the story over and over again. It's a perfect first board book. But it's more. My youngest daughter is 5 years old and her preschool class is asking them to practice talking in front of the whole class. She is at the very early stages of reading (her name, her friends' names, basic words). She was able to read this book in front of the whole class, confidently and with expression. What a wonderful thing - for a young child to think, "Hey, I can read! I can read this all by myself!" So, if you have young children at home, seek out books by Leslie Patricelli. She has a gift for capturing the rhythms and heart of young children. If you have older children, keep your board books. You might find they have the magic key for helping unlock the reader in your children. for more reviews, go to Great Kid Books - helping parents find wonderful books for their children http://greatkidbooks.blogspot.com

my child loves to read books to me. This is one of the few books he will read to me and understands what is a no no and what is a yes yes. I love it!

learning by contrast,
This review is from: No No Yes Yes (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
In response to the reviews that this book gives your kids bad ideas: yes, that was my first reaction as well (although I have not experienced any negative side effects yet). Still, I probably wouldn't buy this book as a baby shower gift, because I don't think it's great for every child (depending on their temperament). Allow me to suggest the following: check this book out at the library before purchasing - and don't read this to your child until you know that they understand picking their nose, writing on the wall and putting toys in the toiled are a no-no!With that said, my 2 1/2 year-old likes this book. It's simple and fun to read. I like how the main character is illustrated; I can say "the baby" - and not he or she. The illustrations convey lots of emotion and it's easy to ad-lib more to the story. Also, another nice thing about the book: kids who are just learning to read (simple words like "no" and "yes") can read this book to younger children and feel a sense of accomplishment. |
