5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album... period.
After comeing home from a *** day of work in May 01', my roommate put in "Yes" and changed my world. Since that day I've been a "Morphine" junky. I am very appreciative to Sandman, Colley, and Conway for providing me with a totaly eclectic sound that takes everything I've ever liked about music and serves it to me with intoxicating songs such as "Whisper". 3.0 out of 5 stars yes=alright
I'm a huge fan of the first song on this record. Honey White is one of the best subtle drug reference songs there is. The second track is great, but with only one exception the record sounds genaricly Morphine. This I might add is a hell of a lot better than most bands, but nothing I didn't hear from Cure for Pain. The exception is Whisper, a super sexy slow cut with a...

The beautifully simple combination of 2 string slide bass and sax give birth to such sickly sweet ballads as "All you way". I now own all works ,with the exception of "Cure for pain", and I listen to them almost religiously everyday, but "Yes" still finds its way to the cd tray most often. If your new to morphine and the works of genius left by the late Mark Sandman, then "Yes" is a great place to start you're soon to be collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly intoxicating..., September 8, 2005

It's amazing that just a few simple instruments - a sax, drums, and a two-string bass - can come together to create something as complex and ingenious as Morphine's music. I sincerely regret that I never had the opportunity to see them live before vocalist Mark Sandman died doing what he loved the most - on stage in 1999. Morphine had so much more left to teach the music world - and Sandman's death was every music-lover's loss.

Yes is an excellent album - one of my all-time favorites. It's driven by the band's trademark sax - which seems to have a mind of its own. And Sandman's hypnotically playful vocals are dark and distorted - part spoken, part sung.

The songs are erratic and slurred. They feel pleasantly intoxicating - like a few too many gin and tonics. "Whisper" is lazy and seductive - like a Caribbean sunset. "I Had My Chance" sounds like the drunken ramblings of a street-corner bum. The entire album is a collection of experiments - concluding with a curveball. "Gone for Good" is quiet, peaceful, and acoustic - sad, but sweet. It's so unlike the rest of the album, but it's absolutely beautiful.

If you're musically open-minded and looking for something out of the ordinary, Yes is the album to buy. You won't be disappointed. It'll give you a great buzz - and you won't have to deal with the headache the next morning.

From the opening track-Honey White, to the last, Gone for Good, I was hooked deep. Mark's passing has ripped a unfillable hole in our planets musical landscape. Such great music from from a humble band ensmble. As Mark said so well on the CD, " I had my chance" , And I can say that this is one CD I won't let go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morphine...the music drug of choice :), August 27, 2004
This review is from: Yes (Audio CD)
Wow!!! That's all I can say is WOW!!! This album just absolutely blew me away. I had never heard anything from these guys from Boston until a friend turned me on to them when this album came out. I don't even know if I can articulate how I feel about this album, but I do know that if you like your jazz served-up "rock style"...then this is the album for you to own. It's nothing short of spectacular!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars a great tape for the road, June 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Yes (Audio CD)
If you've never heard of Morphine, this tape represents them well. Mark Sandmans' lyrics are honest and funny, his voice sultry, and what a great sounding band. I bought this tape at a truck stop of all places and it made my remaining 6 hour drive one of the best. Still till this day it has been my favorite tape and I have turned everyone I know on to Morphine. God bless Mark Sandman. He'll be missed.

Some things are a matter of opinion, and some aren't. Not to sound cocky (too late, I know), but I am writing this for your own good. This is one of the greatest albums ever made. The best you can do for yourself is get it and try to understand it. Start with the quintessential ingredients: words and music. They are there in spades, poetry and musicianship. They also complement each other; nothing disjointed here. Add in the originality of the instrumentation and the quality of the writing, and you have a real gem that has largely flown beneath the "radar" considering its excellence. Do you hear what I mean? Yes. I hope you enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Morphine rocks., November 30, 2007
This review is from: Yes (Audio CD)
There is nothing quite like Morphine.

Tight, throbbing bass. Dirty Tenor, Bari, Bass, and Double Saxophone.

Mark Sandman's vocals.

I love this album. One of my favorites of all time. If you like Rock, Jazz, and Blues, with unbelievable sax, this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Hooked on Morphine, October 16, 2000
By
This review is from: Yes (Audio CD)
Let me bias you with the statement: "Morphine is one of the best bands ever". They are perfectly outfitted with just a two string bass (cause that's all you're able to use a slide with), baratone sax and the simple drums of Billy Conway. From the nuances of flirting on "Whisper" to the lamentful hindsight of "I had my Chance", Mark Sandman's bassy vocals have a sincerity like no other's. They are equaly challenging musically with the use of a double sax on "Radar" and the upbeat toe-tapping raindrop like bass of "Yes". This album easily challenges "Cure for Pain" and by no means shows a deminished effort. If you're an avid Morphine fan, get this album, if you've never heard them before, get this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Yes (Audio CD)
Generally underappreciated by fans, "Yes" remains one of the more enigmatic additions to Morphine's catalog. It's really no surprise that the album's experimental sound didn't win over listeners who first became addicted to the band's more accessible albums, "Cure for Pain" and "Good." But the elements that make those albums great are all apparent: bass, drums, sax, and that voice. Here, Sandman doesn't sing so much as speak to us, weaving wry lyrics and low rock into spare and breathtaking gems like "Yes" and "The Jury." It may not be the easiest listen, but in the end, this unique work is as rewarding as anything else created by these exceptional musicians.
