Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

With Omaha, Nebraska as a prime example, many of the towns that support thriving local music scenes are isolated culturally, cheap places to live, or both. Maybe that’s why New York, the world capitol of capital, hasn’t had a truly notable local scene since the late '70s gabba-gabba heyday of CBGB's. Until recently, that is. As the 16 bands on Yes New York make clear, the city's rock underground stretches far beyond the town's newest stars, the Strokes. Julian Casablancas's crew is present here, courtesy of a concert recording of "New York City Cops" from an outer borough known as Iceland, but so are the doomy dirges of Interpol, the mid-tempo techno-funk of Le Tigre, and the DC-transplant punk of Ted Leo & the Pharmacists . And these are just a few of the city's more established hometown heroes. One of this CD's real pleasures is the opportunity it provides to hear lesser-known fixtures such as Radio 4, Calla, and the Natural History, many of whom owe more to the Brit-punk of Gang of Four and Wire than NYC standard-bearers like the Ramones or Talking Heads. As is practically guaranteed with any compilation, the quality varies from track to track, but it's a pleasure to report that the range is fairly narrow, from pleasantly diverting to truly revelatory. Best of all, Yes New York is a compelling argument that local music is alive and well in one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. --Keith Moerer

Product Description

Led by The Strokes, New York's post-punk/garage rock explosion is breathing new life, new style, and a new attitude into music. Yes New York (named in tribute to No New York, the 1978 Brian Eno-produced NY rock scene comp) features 16 tracks from superstars (The Strokes, Interpol), the young lions (Roger Sisters, Radio 4), critics' faves (Ted Leo, Le Tigre), the next big things (The Walkmen, Longwave), and many more. This is the definitive statement of the current NYC rock scene. Vice. 2003.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disgrace to the no-wave movement, December 18, 2003

All the bands on this compliation should be embarrassed to be on here. Seriously, if this is supposed to be today's answer to the seminal "No New York" compliation, the NYC music scene is in trouble.
Of course some of the tracks are OK, but the overall product is extremely weak. Track down the original "No New York" compilation if you want something real, basically these artists owe their careers to that album. Or buy the Ted Leo album, its also damn fine, and his is one of the only valid tracks on this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars New York City Rocks!!, June 7, 2003

This review is from: Yes New York (Audio CD)
As a native of the East Coast who's now living in Southern California, I have to say that it's fab to be reminded of home. This Album, Yes New York does just that. There is not one bad song on this album. The fact that the first track is a live version of New York City Cops by the Strokes is simply rad. Rock on! As an added bonus, when you buy the album, your're supporting an excellent cause: Musicians on Call.
Seriously, there's so much good music coming out of NYC right now and this album captures all of it. So, check it out. It will not disapoint I promise.
