Editorial Reviews

From the Actor

Eric Burdon and the Animals were one-third of that early British musical triumvirate basing their original sound on the blues. The Rolling Stones hailed from the south in London; The Beatles were west in Liverpool; and up north in Newcastle were the dark and mysterious Animals.

We took a documentary crew to England to capture Eric and his new menagerie of Animals as he headed home to Newcastle upon Tyne and back to the UK for his first tour there in over twenty years. For this homecoming, he decided to shun the usual line-up of roadies, trucks and huge lighting rigs and get back to basics. Everywhere Eric and the band went his fans, friends and the press greeted him with reverence, respect and enthusiasm, and we had our cameras in their faces for most of it. They held a special birthday performance at the historic Opera House that rocked! The hometown crowd loved it and showed their appreciation by selling-out multiple shows there. This is not a concert DVD. It is a documentary-style video featuring interviews as well as performance clips. It’s a rare look into the touring life of a rock and roll legend.

Enjoy!
Craig Kelly, Director

Product Description

The first Varipix DVD release is the result of a collaboration with the incomparable Eric Burdon (blues vocalist extraordinaire and founder of The Animals and WAR). Director Craig Kelly (MachineHeadUSA) documents the behind-the-scenes experience as Eric Burdon performs in his hometown of Newcastle, England for the first time in over 20 years - a memorable homecoming concert and birthday celebration. "Yes, You Can Go Home" is your backstage pass for a trip back in time, to a town where Eric is the "local boy who makes good" and everybody knows and loves him. Interviews with Eric and the band provide insight and perspective to the event, and town "locals" provide a colorful backdrop.

This impeccably produced DVD features Eric and his band (Dave Meros, Dean Restum, Martin Gerschwitz and Bernie Pershey) in performance, backstage and around town as they reprise their role as Newcastle’s homegrown workingman’s band. Humor, irony, frustration and tears are all in evidence as Eric finally brings his legacy back home.

Visit the old haunts and meet the people that were the early influence of one of the inspired voices of our time; experience a musical icon’s working-class roots. Eric Burdon and the Animal’s "Yes, You Can Go Home" is a rare, uncensored and personal documentary that will be a cherished part of the collector’s media library and is an interesting piece of rock-and-roll history.

Co-produced by Eric Burdon, Craig Kelly and Joel Veatch in cooperation with Flying Spot Motion Media/Seattle.

4.0 out of 5 stars I felt like I was there!, November 29, 2003

For anyone who has ever wanted to tour with a band, and see the real backstage life, this DVD is for you. If you're an Eric Burdon fan, that makes this even better.
As the director states, this is not a concert DVD. Rather than experience Eric Burdon from a fan's point of view, you will experience their journey back to their roots as one of the insiders. I felt like I belonged backstage with the band as I watched this DVD. Watching Eric walk the streets of his hometown and reminisce about his memories there gave me a unique perspective into his life.
I also enjoyed watching the band's interaction when there was no audience to perform for. I got a chance to see what they were really like when no one else was around.
All in all, it was a wonderful, matchless experience. If you are an Eric Burdon fan, you must own this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Was there, December 18, 2003

This review is from: Yes, You Can Go Home - On the Road with Eric Burdon & The Animals (DVD)
I have seen Eric several times in concert, Big venues, the Lorlei in 86, and bars in Munich 70's and 80's and once in the United States (Osh Kosh Jun 2003). The DVD gives the feel for the concerts, and if you have seen the master in the past two years you know eactly where you are in the concert. Well worth getting for the hard core Eric Burden fan. Now if I can find a complete copy of factory girl.

Yeah, this is enjoyable as both an insight into a bands life on the road and a period of Eric musical journey, and brief tour of England.
He's moved on a lot since this was recorded and now has a new band and focus, but this is good to see especially for his fans.
