Review

With clarity, spiritual insight, and sensitivity to Jewish context, Derek Leman guides us through some of the most important stories told by Yeshua and about Yeshua. In doing so, Leman accepts the challenge inherent in the Gospel narrative: to become part of the story, and to tell it anew. ---Rabbi Dr. Mark Kinzer, President Messianic Jewish Theological Institute, author of Postmissionary Messianic Judaism and Israel's Messiah and the People of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work of Art!!, July 13, 2011
This review is from: Yeshua in Context (Paperback)
Derek Leman's Yeshua in Context is a work of art both literally and figuratively. The beginning chapters work together to sketch out a mysterious image of Yeshua--the anointed One. As you read on, the image begins to take a more defined shape as you encounter Yeshua the Exorcist and Healer...Even further, Leman demonstrates his mastery as a literary artist as he interweaves the Jewish Messiah into a context comfortable enough for Messianic Jews, insightful enough for Christians and even thought provoking enough for others seeking to know more. More than a literary painting however, the scriptures references at the beginning of each chapter give the book a devotional like feel with a consistent infusion of far from shallow Biblical commentary. Even being the avid reader that I am, I found myself not only intrigued, but challenged to know more about Yeshua and His Messianic mission. The endlessness of Yeshua the Messiah in context makes this book well worth multiple readings and studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars For any reader, July 11, 2011

gori (middle of nowhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yeshua in Context (Paperback)
There is no lack of Christian literature on the market today. There are books to reach the academic, the un(der)studied, the emotional and the skeptic. Yeshua in Context is one of those rare books which can meet the reader of any trait, hold them captive and enable them to walk away knowing a great deal more about the truth of the faith. Leman cites scripture and scholars as he weaves us through the life of Yeshua and the immense value in understanding the history of the Jewish faith, a message within itself that for so many years has been lost to the point of falling on deaf ears. To the emotional, they will be moved by the dictation of truth, justice, mercy and love held in such high regard that we see these in every action and word through Yeshua's ministry. These traits are what bring the lost to the Lord, a belief that there is a higher love and forgiveness despite their transgressions. The skeptic will appreciate the honesty in which Leman approaches contradictions in the accounts of the Messiah's life and offers a genuine explanation within the cultural boundaries of the original writers, not a current/western interpretation. He also tackles the tougher questions such as Yeshua owning up to his authority and role in the world. Although short by numbers of pages, Yeshua in Context brings an awakening to any reader who allows themselves to come to the pages with an honest heart. Even those who are completely unsure of what to expect will be moved by the passionate life of Yeshua and a life of the same attributes if we are eager enough to dive in.
