David Campbell, One of the Few Classy Cabaret Stars of Today,
By A Customer
This review is from: Yesterday Is Now (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD about a year ago, and love it. My favorite songs are "Help Is On The Way" and the medley of "Out Of My Dreams/I Have Dreamed". I think his vocal presentation and interpretation is gorgeous! He has the same vocal presence as another one of my favorite male Pop/Cabaret vocalists, Michael Poss. In fact, David Campbell's CD listed above, and Michael Poss'new CD release 'Silver Screen Serenades', contain one of my favorite songs, "On Such A Night As This". It's always fascinating to hear the same song arranged, interpreted and presented by vocalists in a fresh, new way. Michael Poss' version is Big Band style, yet David's is done slower and more introspective. Both are excellent recordings. I think David has the same vocal quality as Broadway great, Michael Crawford. I hope he will be performing in Los Angeles in the near future. I'll also be looking for his name in a Broadway show. I know it'll be coming, soon!

Excellent combination of "oldies" with a couple of new.,

I've heard David in person on several occasions, and he's so fine. Both CD's show off his versatility and style. On YESTERDAY IS NOW, I particularly enjoy ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND, and knowing the story behind ON SUCH A NIGHT AS THIS makes it even more enjoyable. David "borrowed" the song from Michael Feinstein, and wound up winning a trip to New York with a Master's Class with it. When he sang it in New York, Feinstein was in the audience, and went backstage after the concert to ask where David got the song. David acknowledged "borrowing" it from him, and they became fast friends. David went on to become the youngest star to open at RAINBOW & STARS in New York City.

I very much disagree with the reviewer who said that "natural beauty of voice needs more training." I certainly believe in the value of vocal training. It's not clear to me that Mr. Campbell hasn't been well-trained. The beauty of Mr. Campbell's talent is that he isn't afraid to interpret his music using the gift that is uniquely his, without homogenizing it as would a singer staying true to his training. There is an emotion and intensity in Mr. Campbell's interpretations that defy training and which could be restrained otherwise. Mr. Campbell is not an opera singer. He tells stories; he stirs emotions, without the over-stylized tendencies of other singers, like Mandy Patinkin. I am so impressed with many of choices Mr. Campbell made in his delivery. He doesn't hold notes too long for dramatic effect; his tempos don't slow to convey melodrama. His voice is a glorious instrument. I bought the CD 2 weeks ago and have listened to it repeatedly. The songs that have become my favorites are the ones I've never heard before, particularly "The Kid Inside" and "Mr. Tanner". In these selections, and even the well-known ones on the CD, his talents burst forth so strongly that the new songs become standards and the standards become new songs. Bravo.

An incredible debut album for this young Aussie singer,

I was lucky enough to see David perform in Sydney earlier this year, and I was so impressed that I bought both of his CDs on the spot. For many months his second CD, TAKING THE WHEEL, held a constant place in my CD changer while YESTERDAY IS NOW stayed on the shelf. Once I finally did listen to it, however, it too received a place of honor in my CD player. A more unusual group of songs you never will find, but somehow, they all compliment each other. From the uplifting ("Help Is on the Way") to the heartfelt ("A Kid Inside"), this CD doesn't disappoint. "Only Heaven Knows" is the title song of an original Australian musical that David starred in. An incredibly touching song of lovers parting interpreted perfectly by David's smooth tenor voice, this song alone is worth purchasing YESTERDAY IS NOW.

Amazing singer!,

I was first acquainted with David Campbell from his Hey, Mr. Producer performance. I was impressed and after finding that he had done some solo work, I bought this CD. I was astounded. David Campbell has such an amazing voice, and the songs on this CD are perfectly suited for it! It's a wonderful collection - I can honestly say that all the songs are good songs (although some tend to be a little cliche cabaret). The Australian Musical Medley is my favorite - David's voice is so energetic and his love of his art is so evident! I strongly recommend this CD to anyone looking for either a fresh voice singing some old favorites (and new ones that are sure to become favorites!) or just an amazing singer!

A Dream Come True Singing For You,
By A Customer
This review is from: Yesterday Is Now (Audio CD)
David does lively renditions of old favourites like "Alexander's Ragtime Band" as well as plaintive new songs like "What Ever Happened To Melody" (full of American nostalgia) and "Errol Flynn". He sings some great novel story songs like "On Such a Night As This" and "Broadway Baby". My favourite is the uplifting reassurance in "Help Is On the Way". This CD is 55 minutes of bliss - Australia's gift to the songs that linger in your heart and mind for days. Discover him today!

Like many others, I first happened across David Campbell on the "Hey Mr. Producer" CD/DVD and was very impressed with his singing and acting. I'll admit I was a little concerned when I first started playing this CD - the first song just didn't seem to meet the standard I was expecting. However, by the time he started singing the poignant "Error Flynn", he had won me over. He also takes an interesting twist on Sondheim's Broadway Baby - normally sung by women - he carries it off. I'll purchase other CDs by Mr. Campbell and would love to see him on stage.

Only Heaven Knows if There's a Better Cabaret Singer Around!,

This review is from: Yesterday Is Now (Audio CD)
The first of David Campbell's CD's is a brilliant start and will make you want to run out and by his second CD, "Taking the Wheel".Campbell is a Cabaret singer the likes of Michael Feinstein and Brian Lane Green. Not only is his choice of music and his phrasing and interpretation impeccable, but his voice is beautiful on top. If you have ever had the pleasure of experiencing him live (in a Cabaret, or a musical), then you know that he also has an amazing presence is.

Natural beauty of voice needs more training...,
This review is from: Yesterday Is Now (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD on the recommendation of an "also purchased" list for another recommendation given to me by Amazon. Campbell frequently displays a beauty of voice and all the needed physical attributes for producing good music, but I'm afraid, like John Barrowman, he went too public before having enough really good teaching. There are frequent inconsistencies in delivery. The sounds are roughed up with too much force for volume. The highs many times suffer break-up from the same cause. But, Campbell has the stuff to make something great out of his voice. He's no match for Michael Feinstein or Tom Andersen at this point. Hope he finds a really competent teacher.

Broadway fan in Japan,

I had expected a lot before I listened to this CD for the first time, because it was the guy that impressed me so much in the video:"HEY MR PRODUCER!", singing "Martin Guerre" and "The Last Night of the World". But his singing in this CD is somehow unsatisfactory. His voice is, yes, beautiful, he has (probably) perfect technique of singing, but his singing in this CD lacks some 'spirit'. I purchased, at the same time, Sean McDermott's "My Broadway" which REALLY 'touched' me. The difference probably comes from the fact that Sean McDermott actually acted and sang most of the numbers on his stage. So, I hope David Campbell will also appear on the stages in NY, London or anywhere (Tokyo, too) and release his future CDs from his own numbers. I believe he can, because he is so talented and still young. But how could he perform so perfectly in "HEY MR PRODUCER!", though he had never acted in "Martin Guerre" nor "Miss Saigon" ?
