Capitol's Finest Offering From the Fab Four,
This review is from: Yesterday And Today (Vinyl)
I prefer the Beatles' British releases since through them I made my first acquaintance with the band. But as love turned to fanaticism, I began looking over the Liverpudlians' career with a keener interest, often looking outside of the official discography for peripheral scraps, compilations, and outtakes. It was in the first year or so of that obsession that I discovered Capitol's albums that first introduced the Beatles to America in the early to mid-1960's.
Initially, and like the band themselves, I was put-off by the so-called wisdom of record executives to repackage what was already a good thing; resequencing the British releases feels nothing short of sacrilege, but as I've mellowed I've taken a more lighthearted view of the whole thing. Now I look on the Capitol releases as simply mix-tapes made by fans across the pond. And it doesn't really matter all that much; despite the misguided efforts Capitol employed in putting out these records, their efforts did little to halt the spread of some of the finest song-writing of the last 50 years. "Yesterday and Today" is the tenth and perhaps finest mix of the Capitol run, one of the last before the Beatles would put the kibosh on the mix and match strategy, insisting that future British releases be released on both sides of the Atlantic. Here's the track listing: Drive My Car I'm Only Sleeping Nowhere Man Doctor Robert Yesterday Act Naturally And Your Bird Can Sing If I Needed Someone We Can Work It Out What Goes On Day Tripper Choice cuts from Revolver, Rubber Soul, and Help are included, but we also see "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" on an album, and that's where Capitol shines the most; the Beatles kept their singles and albums mostly separate, but in America we see them fused together with compelling results. It's a shame that Capitol would only be allowed one more go at this sort of thing while the Beatles were still together- the Hey Jude album in 1969 was the last, though that one was all singles and put together by Alan Klein, not Capitol. It would have been fascinating to see a mixing of Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. Even the final albums could have created some very interesting results. And as a final addendum for anyone who has the mono box set, there was a mono pressing of this album which is easily recreated by burning the tracks onto a single CD. I've been enjoying mine for some time now.

This review is from: Yesterday and Today [Extra Tracks] [Digi Pak] [Import] (Audio CD)
The title here says that this CD is "Yesterday and Today" - However the actual album being sold is something called "Yesterday's Mixes Today" Here we go again. Another listing with images of different products, that don't match the title. If you order this item, what will you get? The one pictured in image 1,2,3 or is the one behind door number 4? Who Knows? Amazon needs to crack down on this trend of sellers hijacking the listings. Some sellers -(not all mind you) hijck a listing by putting up conflicting images and sometimes bad information in the form or a review which does not match the original product description. They do this so they can "shotgun" a CD into multiple locations. Who loses from this practice. We the buyers are the losers. Be very careful - and read the buyers description before you make your purchase.

This review is from: Yesterday and Today (Butcher Cover) (Audio CD)
This CD is an import from somewhere but the packaging is very authentic and well done. It has the appearance except that it is smaller of course of the original LP's packaging down to the inner sleeve and the LP label.
I don't know what the guy was talking about who said the tracks were not correct because they are exactly what was on the 1965 version. This album was not released in the UK and has not been available in any digital form until I found this one on amazon. Believe me, I have been looking.
