Editorial Reviews

Review

“Endearing theatricality…. Loren’s stories are unfailingly sweet, modest, patient…. The memoirist is in a magnanimously reflective mood. She is gracious about her own success and protective about her family. She is also tender about the other men who affected her life, both personally as well as professionally—never more so than about Cary Grant… This is a story that rewards nice readers who are contented to give lovers some privacy, even if they happen to be movie stars.” (New York Times Book Review)

A lot of what is in this book we have already known -- however, to read it in Sophia's writing makes it more special. This is a woman who has had great highs in her life -- and many lows. The love she has for her freiends and family make her even more special. Down to earth, sexy, and still a very beautiful woman -- she will always be on the great stars around the world. I loved the book!!There is nothing fake about Sophia -- what you see is what you get: A very special human being.

Nothing earth shattering regarding this new memoir by legendary actress Sophia Loren, but it is an undeniably charming account of a very long career and a life well lived. Loren recalls her illegitimate birth, her tenacious mother and younger sister, her typically missing father Riccardo, her loving maternal grandparents, and life in war torn Italy where there was never enough in terms of food and other resources. There are bits and pieces of an emerging career in modeling and acting and recollections of meeting her great yet unlikely love Carlo Ponti. Much of it comes across as a Wikepedia entry, but it is Loren's warmth and soul that had me won over almost immediately. She refects on friends and comrades such as Vittorio de Sica, Marcello Mastroianni, Richard Burton, Cary Grant, Peter Sellers, Audrey Hepburn, and Clark Gable. Nope, no secretive and long hidden stories told here, but you get the strong sense the highlight of Loren's life has been a long and happy marriage, motherhood, and now Nonnihood.
This book is crammed with vintage Loren pictures and copies of mostly family pictures and pages written in Italian to friends and family. It is a nice touch, but if you aren't proficient in Italian these are useless. I could only decipher key words so it didn't make much sense to me.
I'm giving this book 4* for no better reason than this book was touching without being lurid or mean and I truly enjoyed it. Now even as an older lady, Loren still exudes the charm and warmth that has endeared her to millions of fans.

I love Loren. Simple and true. Had to really relax and let her take me back and forth, back and forth, so ready was I to rush through and learn more about her life. But written as if all memories come to her while she waits for her grandchildren to arrive...a very sweet angle. Loved it! Now I will be checking Amazon for all the Italian movies she did with Marcello.....a read worth waiting all these years for!

I enjoyed this story written by Sophia. She has a zest for life and an optimistic outlook even in crisis like going to prison. She constantly describes the fun she had making a movie and giving her whole self to it and there's a genuine love for people and her native land. I love reading about real people and their life experiences.

A wonderful book that includes her earlier years trying to survive the war, a background on her family. It tells about how she got into show business, the difficulties from her marriage and the people she worked with. Being older I remember the famous people she acted with including Cary Grant, etc. A quick read.

Sophia Loren's autobiograpy always kept my interest. I always admired her as both a beautiful woman who proved that she was a great actress as well. I saw her film "Two Women" many years ago. It was my first foreign film. I highly recommend viewing this film to anyone who hasn't seen it. "yesterday, Today, Tomorrow", gives wonderful insight into both the woman and the actress.

I swept through this book in almost one evening! I grew up with Sophia Loren. She was my mom's favorite and then became mine too. I'm so glad to see that her life has ended up so contented with two grown boys who have good careers and who both love their mama so much. She must be very proud.
