As a rather shy, awkward 14 year old back in August 1964, I took refuge in the great British invasion music that was washing over the US that year. This is one of the albums that I listened to for hours on end. I have been dragging that same vinyl lp around all these years. God only knows how many 1,000 times it's been played or how many turntables it's been played on. I am so vey happy to see this album reissued on cd in it's original form. Yes, all the songs on this cd are available on various compilations and have been for years. For me, having these songs in the correct playing order with the original cover art is a dream come true.
The album starts out with the huge hit, "A Summer Song". Also included are "Willow Weep for Me" and, of course, the title hit, and "Only For the Young", a very enjoyable guitar solo with orchestra backing by Chad Stuart. "The Truth Always Hurts the Heart" is a typical '64 British invasion guitar and drum pop song that was featured on "The Patty Duke Show". Other stand outs are "September in the Rain", "Dirty Old Town", "Too Soon My Love", and a very interesting stereo mix of "Like I Love You Today" featuring the vocals in the left channel and most of the instrumental track in the right channel. The album closes with the tastefully done anti-war ballad, "No Tears For Johnny". Remember, this album came out just months before the Vietnam War really started to heat up. How prophetic on the part of C&J. If you're looking for a greatest hits compilation, this is not it. If, however, you are interested in experiencing the first recorded efforts by one of the British invasion's premier groups, you can't go wrong with this cd. True, the sound quality, while more than adequate, does not match some of the other cds available, but it certainly beats my 45 year old vinyl lp. This cd will be in my car cd player for a very long time.

Muscially, this is a four-star ablum, a classic slice of the folkier-side of the British Invasion. You can actually get a better version of most of this album on the English CD of Yesterday's Gone, but it is missing 3-4 of the lesser tracks found here. At least 2/3rds of this album is also on the standard "best of" CD. But I really wanted this original American C&J album for nostalgia reasons, as I have had the record since I was a kid (but have about loved it to death).
I was very disappointed in the CD packaging. There is a note on the Amazon listing for it that says something about this CD "being produced on order, with original album art." Well, you do get the original front cover reproduced, but not the back cover -- which has great, funny liner notes, featuring a letter from Dean Martin (who hosted C&J not just on his TV show, but as guests at his home) and a letter in response from C&J. How much trouble would it have been to scan the back cover and reproduce it on CD insert? As it is, the inside of the four-page CD insert is blank, and the back side just features the "Max Cat Records" logo -- not the original, World Artists label. But what really fries me is that the back of the jewell box only lists song titles -- there are no songwriter credits or times or any other information given. Cheap, stingy packaging. Worst sin: no album name or artist name on the spine of the CD. I had to pull apart the jewel case and tape a title on the spine (otherwise you can't tell what album it is when shelved). And it sounds like some of this may have been duped from a record, although not real obvious. So, buy this version if you want it, like me, for nostaliga reasons and the few tracks that don't appear on the "Best Of" or English versions of it. Otherwise, you are better off with one of those CDs.

I've always loved Chad and Jeremy's music and I thought their music was gone forever. A Summer Song has always been one of my favorites, and I've been enjoying this CD since I've received it! The thing I love about Amazon is that I can hear clips of songs before I buy and can pick out which CD sounds the best for me. Thanks Amazon! You've delivered once again!!!
