5.0 out of 5 stars Self- help for people who like to do things the hard way., August 23, 1998
This review is from: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Recovery Meditations for Hard Cases (Paperback)
I have recently read this book and felt it warranted a special mention .It is a really valuable departure from the usual self-help formula view of life and life's problems. Though Barry L claims authorship of this collection of inspiring meditations and advice , he also acknowledges it is more a collection of shared wisdom from many people who have entered rehab and recovery from compulsive and addictive behaviours . It is especially aimed at 'hard-cases' ,people who usually struggle to take on board advice which is good for them ,and might want it framed a bit differently than the holier than thou self-help books usual angle.Life is not all roses and never will be ,but rather than succumb to an addiction to hide from confronting your problems it gently nudges you to see you are fooling nobody but yourself . It provides a coomon sense view ,the balanced view of life ,and encourages you to discover the power to change And because it is framed differently ,it hits home as plain common sense through a collection of short reflections and meditations ,gathered from the author's experience of recovery meetings of AA,Al anon ,etc. The wisdom and advice is coming from people who have been there, and it helps create that bond of shared trust and directness ,the kind of plain practical talk that inspires and motivates, gives confidence and helps provide the courage to change what can be changed . The advice goes beyond dealing with addictive behaviours ,such as alcohol, overeating ,gambling etc ,it can help rebuild your whole relationship with yourself and with others .

It has helped me ,Maybe it can help you too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humour filled short passages to read again and again, April 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Recovery Meditations for Hard Cases (Paperback)
Such a delight! I read this book from cover to cover and simply restarted it again immediately. Lots of smiles and good thoughts for those of us struggling with sobriety and maintaining our sense of self and humor. DEFINITELY worth reading!

Yesterday's Tomorrow is simply great. It is not ponderous or overly impressed with itself. It cuts like a knife but leaves you laughing. A great help for this alcoholic.

5.0 out of 5 stars great recovery book, December 14, 2008
This review is from: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Recovery Meditations for Hard Cases (Paperback)
I love this book. I love his twisted way of looking at things. I am not in recovery (AA) but many close to me are and this book is real! Honest. accurate to the way many addicts think. I recommend this book to any one in recovery!

This is a great book for those in recovery, especially if you've been around for awhile. He tells it like it is. He's hard-hitting, blunt and irreverently funny. I have shared passages of this book with others and plan to purchase a few more copies for friends in the rooms as gifts.

This is my all time favorite meditation book. It really speaks to the core of the disease in a way that gets my attention, which is not easy to do. Barry's experience with many different addictions gives him a unique perspective for those of us that manage to cope with this disease in more than one aspect of our life. I love his humor and gift for telling a story, because after all that is truly what recovery is all about telling our stories of how we do recover despite the odds if we work our program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Universal Wisdom, November 14, 2010

This review is from: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Recovery Meditations for Hard Cases (Paperback)
This book of meditations from AA meetings contains Universal Wisdom applicable to all of us. When a friend gave me this book on the evening after my cancer surgery, I read the first 60 pages when I could not sleep. I found it very comforting, and sometimes very funny. I have since bought copies for other folks as well. One was a lady from California whom I met in NZ. She gave the book to her son's drug re-hab counsellor who in turn used it as his "text book" for his clients. Another person whom I bought it for recently e-mailed me saying, " I so identify with this dude. I read the introduction and look forward to the rest of the book." I am not, nor have I ever been a drug user or alcoholic. However, this book has meditations in it that will resonate with all of us. If you ever have a gun in your mouth and are thinking of blowing your brains out, read this book first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meditations for the un-Lofty, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Recovery Meditations for Hard Cases (Paperback)
I have a dozen meditation books. This is the one I use. Sometimes the more high-minded a meditation is the less I can relate to it. Yesterday's Tomorrow reaches me in the trenches where life is messy and offers comments that reflect years of recovery experience. Barry L. addresses human nature's wily ability to use Anything addictively. Abrasive, gritty, real. Real help. Real hope.
