5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time.
This is a great reissue of Willie's 1971 RCA concept album, digitally remastered, with excellent liner notes, recording dates, sessionography, and orginal artwork. Producer Felton Jarvis defeated RCA's 10 track limit for the album by creating two medleys in order to include all 12 songs. Far ahead of its time, the album opens with a conversation between God and a soul...

Far ahead of its time, the album opens with a conversation between God and a soul preparing for birth. An Editor's Note in the original artwork states that all the songs except 'Family Bible' were written by Willie Nelson. The editor had apparently not heard the story about Willie selling that song in a bar for fifty bucks. The album, largely ignored by the music idustry and consumers when released, is now widely regarded as a masterpiece. It is an essential album for Willie Nelson collectors and fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars great album, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Yesterday's Wine (Audio CD)
One of Willie's most underated album. Great songs all the way through it. Family bible, Me and Paul and Yesterdays Wine are some of Willie's best. If you liked Shotgun Willie, Phases and Stages and Red headed you'll love this one too.

I picked this album up on a whim, and I have to say that it has become one of my favorite folk/country albums. This concept album tells the story of one man's life from birth to death in a deeply spiritual and moving way. The songwriting is second to none, and the production values took me by surprise, especially considering that the entire album was written and recorded inside of a week. This is a must for any fans of folk or outlaw country, or anyone who is looking for one of the best concept albums of all time.

Thank God for vinyl! I have had this wonderful 1971 Willie Nelson album since the mid-1970s. It was a commercial flop, but it contains two classic Willie-penned tunes: "Yesterday's Wine" (horribly remade by George Jones) and "Me and Paul." Side one of the album shows a gospel influence, but Willie really hits his stride with side two. "Summer of Roses" and "December Day" would surprise a lot of fans used to Willie's early honky-tonk songs: They are gentle, reflective songs with nice vocals, especially "December Day." "Yesterday's Wine" is a nice 3/4 tempo song about aging. "Me and Paul" brings to mind the Greatful Dead song "Trucking." Willie sings about touring with drummer Paul English, and almost getting "busted in Laredo, but for something that I'd rather not disclose." I love this album, and would love to get my hands on a copy on compact disc. One of Willie's better pre-Red Headed Stranger albums. I am certainly glad I hung on to my vinyl.

I have not been that big of a Willie Nelson fan...bought this for my husband. That said, I really liked this album and have bought more to send to relatives.
