Book Description

August 28, 2007 6 and upK and up
When Emily Bing and Matt Martinez discovered the old red sled in Emily’s attic, they never dreamed it would hold amazing powers. But the magical Canadian Flyer has taken the pair back through time to the most exciting points in Canada’s history: to the far north to come face to face with pirates, to the Klondike to join the gold rush, and even so far back in time that they encounter dinosaurs. Now, the intrepid duo is ready for its next adventure — an incredible voyage to the Viking settlement of Vinland. Beating Columbus by almost 500 years, Leif Eriksson was the first European to set foot on North American soil. Emily and Matt join Eriksson and his crew on their historic journey to Vinland in the year 1001. But although Eriksson successfully navigates across the sea to the New World, once on land he and his crew become hopelessly lost! Will Matt and Emily’s ingenious plan get them back on course? This riveting, fact-based adventure sweeps readers headlong into the past.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Canadian schoolchildren are the big winners…this series makes Canadian history fun, exciting and accessible for elementary school students. While they are learning about past events, they are also honing their reading skills on the books’ short chapters, high-frequency words and visual clues. (Chronicle Herald )

The story has both girl and boy appeal and just the right amount of danger and adventure to add to the historical fiction. (CM Magazine: Canadian Review of Materials )

Helped along with thoughtful end notes by author Wishinsky, readers will have a deeper appreciation of Vikings’ sailing prowess, and their way of life…For kids wanting a thrilling read or help with a school project, Yikes, Vikings! will help them set sail. (Hamilton Spectator )

The Canadian Flyer time-travel adventure series…can be counted on to provide easy primary reading plus some factual information about various historical periods. (Victoria Times-Colonist )
