I've DVR'd alot of Yo Gabba Gabbas, but I've never seen 2 of these episodes so my DD was highly entertained seeing something new. We love this show and keeps her attention.

At the beginning of the 1936 Soviet musical comedy "Circus" ("Tsirk") we see a young woman fleeing from an angry mob in America because of some scandal (she carries a baby as she flees so we think we might know what has happened). The young woman's name is, depending on the subtitles, Marian Dixon/Mary Dickson, and she is played by Lyubov Orlova, the first star of Soviet cinema. When next we see the vaudeville dancer she is in Moscow with her German manager von Kenischitz (Sergei Antimonov) on tour. The cover shot shows "Mary" inside a giant "cannon" that shoots her to a trapeze, where she sings her heart out. The comic subplot involves a Soviet stage director who wants to "copy" this act for the USSR (certainly an interesting political comment to make in a film during the Stalinist era). Meanwhile, when Mary falls in love with a Soviet engineer, the ringmaster threatens to reveal her horrible secret to the world: Marion did not just have a baby out of wedlock, she had a black baby. However, she eventually learns that the one place she can find happiness and acceptance is in the USSR among the Soviet people. They certainly do not try to stone her the way those ugly Americans did at the start of the film.
"Circus" is one of three Soviet musical comedies of the period directed by Grigori Alexandrov and starring Orlova currently available from Polart & Facets Video. The sound of this film was a bit problematic for me because on the first volume in this series, "Jolly Fellows," the sound of Orlova singing was superb; she really put Jeanette McDonald to shame. However, that is not the case with "Circus." Alexndrov intended this film as "an eccentric comedy...a real side splitter," but the dark moments take a bit of the wind out of its sails. Despite the title the look at actual (?

My son is absolutely obsessed with Yo Gabba Gabba. He watches it nearly every day (28 episodes and counting on the DVR!), so you can imagine how much he squealed with delight when he opened the package. His favorite episode of the four is Circus (and Mommy likes it too because it has Weird Al in it--love him!). Weird Al enlists the Gabba Gang to be part of his circus and they all perform fun circus acts. And the rest of the episodes are just as entertaining too! If you have a Gabba fan in your household, Yo Gabba Gabba!: Circus is a must-have.

Lot of reviews on here that have nothing to do with the Soviet film. Wonderful colorization of an old Soviet 'classic.' Still very watchable and an interesting topic given the state of American treatment of blacks at the time. This was a time in which Paul Robeson was journeying to Moscow and singing the Soviet national anthem. Thousands of those who, believing the propaganda, emigrated to the Worker's Paradise were sent by Stalin's orchestrated terror into the Lubianka and gulags, along with a million Soviets, priests, those formerly from opposition party, as well as many selected in order to meet quotas emanating from the center.

The music is memorable, particularly the title song which became an unofficial Soviet anthem.

Rather than by full season, but I'm guessing this is a low budget show and Nickelodeon is trying to find a way to keep the coffers flowing, even if it means having to buy more discs. The show is well-worth supporting, taking the best bits of the old pre-Elmo Sesame Street conceptually and updating it to be modern and vibrant while still retaining a timeless feel to it. The bitrate of this disc vs. streaming is really odd, though, as it comes across almost like minicams on these DVDs while it seems more "normal" on the streams...

My granddaugher absolutely LOVES Yo Gabba Gabba. She watches her video over and over and keeps very entertained. I can say she has learned alot from her videos like "don't bite your friends" and "the party in her tummy" encourages her to eat. Its amazing the way she learns while having fun watching . We will be back for more............. Thanks...........

I absolutely love this show for my daughter. This DVD particularly because of the variety it gives. One con is that one episode "FUN" is already on a different DVD, which i think is on the "Music Makes Me Move" DVD. So i feel like i've been jipped a little, but my baby is too young to understand LOL.
