I read the entire book in one night! Being 25 I could really identify with what Kayla was going through. I liked the fact that the people in the book were so realistic. I found myself so caught up in the book that I was rooting for Kayla like she was my best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!, November 8, 2000

I read the entire book in one night! Being 25 I could really identify with what Kayla was going through. I liked the fact that the people in the book were so realistic. I found myself so caught up in the book that I was rooting for Kayla like she was my best friend.

It was good reading about someone around my own age who wasn't strung out on dope, running dope, or selling booty. Kayla's just a regular young woman out here looking for love. And the situations she gets herself into while she's looking are just too funny. And the drama she goes through is just too real. And listen, what she finally does to Wil at the end, let me tell you, I would do it too.

I'm telling, you I'm really feeling this book! I hope the author's next book is about the same subject, because she really knows how to tell it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I read this in 3 hours, January 24, 2001
This review is from: Yo Yo Love (Paperback)
Daaimah S. Poole, 23 University student has written her first novel, it is da bomb yall...Yup that's right I loved this book. I'm looking for the love CD and the video..associated with this book.

The story starts with Kayla finding out her college roommate is getting married and leaving school. Kayla moves out of the dorms and gets her own apartment. She struggles with school, working as a waitress and trying to find L-O-V-E.

Kayla tired and needing sleep decides to quit her job waitressing.

The story begins to move from this point on, page after page of fun, easy reading and interesting characters. Kayla is pressed to find love, she wants love and thinks she needs it.

The language used in this book is hip. The points are clearly spelled out in the book. I like the way Kaylas tells her story, you are right there with her, even when she's thinking or just kidding.

I fell in love with Kayla she knew was head strong and truly believed she knew what she wanted until she had it all and didn't know what to do with it.

While reading this book I was saddened that it had to end, it certaionly reads like "I need more" I will be on the look out for Ms Daaimah Poole, she will certainly give some a run for their money. Watch out yall she has a book coming out possibly called "You Don't Understand"

Place this on your To read or purchase list you won't be disappointed.

This review is from: Yo Yo Love (Paperback)
Yo Yo Love is the debut novel by Daaimah S. Poole and tells the story of Kayla
Johnson. Kayla has decided at the ripe old age of 20 that she is tired of
being by herself and that she wants to be in a relationship. The story that is
told in Yo Yo Love is a parent’s nightmare. Kayla flounders from one unhealthy
relationship to another with the thought and hope that the current man will
finally be the one. She lacks a mind of her own and is easily persuaded by the
men in her life to do foolish things. Some of the things Kayla did include
having sex a few hours after meeting a man , getting a man’s name tattooed to
her arm, spending a weekend away with a virtual stranger, and a plethora of
other unwise choices.

Kayla is irresponsible and immature and she is placed in situations throughout
the story where she must serve as an example to her younger sister. Considering
her behavior, this seems unconscionable. When I started reading this book, I
thought that the problem was me and that I wasn’t the target audience. However
after dicussing this book with a few people of various ages, I concluded that
the story is simply careless. I think it condones reckless behavior and shows
little growth in the main character. Towards the end of the book, Ms. Poole
throws a lesson in there, but its too little too late and it is negated by
actions of Kayla.

I think Daaimah Poole has great writing potential. I can see her talent in
this book, but the story simply lacked substance to me. I got what she was
trying to say and I acknowledge that there are women like Kayla in this world,
but I simply don’t value reading about the insanity of their behavior.

3.0 out of 5 stars Liked it, but ...., January 9, 2002
This review is from: Yo Yo Love (Paperback)
I really wanted to get this book, and once I did, I didn't like it. You have this girl who goes around with these guys and eventually gets the short end of the stick, and what is the point? Why are we getting these stories about another sister getting dogged by some brother?? If we continue to put out these things, guess what, the reality won't be no better. But if we put out stories that can give us some semblance of hope at the end of the story, perhaps we can be a more enlightened people. Not to put down Ms.Poole, though I feel she has promise, I am getting tired of the same old same old.

5.0 out of 5 stars FULL OF EXCITEMENT!!!, February 8, 2001

This book was fantastic. First of all it was fast paced and held my interest throughout the entire book. I DID NOT want to put it down. When I would put it down, I would try to figure out what was going to happen next. It was descriptive enough to make me feel like I was Kayla and I was dealing with Wil in real life. I actually had fun reading this. I laughed and cried. There were times when I wanted to choke Yazmine and other times I wanted to hug her and tell her how much I understood. Kayla is much younger than I am but I just hope that the females who read this book realize how important it is to get your education and not put all your focus on your love life. Yo Yo Love explained how many mistakes Kayla made trying to get and keep that "dream man." Sometimes those dreams can really mess you up. I think that if the younger generation (and some of the older) would pay attention to what Ms. Poole is saying, they'll one day thank her for that lesson.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why, November 1, 2001

I have been reading a lot of reviews, where women keep saying she was talking about them and how much they can relate, but no one is saying how unhealthy living this kind of lifestyle is. Going from man to man, and whoever shows you some attention is not what the African American female should be about, and this book glamourizes African American women going through life disillusioned and just plain stupid over men. That's not the kind of image we should be wanting promoted about us. Don't we get enough badgering from these terrible music videos and how we are portrayed in motion pictures? Daaimah Poole's style of writing was very good, I will admit, because I read this book in one day, but I did not like the subject matter or the main character. There was no resolution in Kayla's character. I know it's REAL, but we don't have to glamourize it.

A college girl who thinks that she will never find Mr. Right has been to hell and back. She goes out with a lot of guys but none of then seems to be the right one. A couple of guys have played her and did her wrong. In the end she has a boyfriend, Will. She thinks that he loves her and she knows that she loves him. But this boyfriend of hers ends up having a wife. So she decides to have it her way and goes out with two guys at the same time, Shamir and Will. She gets caught. The one guy that might have been Mr. Right had left her because of what she has done. While Will ends up leaving her for his wife and she ends up alone.

"I took my shirt off so he could oil me down; mmm I thought I could get used to this. Then I noticed that Shamir had stopped and suddenly I remembered the tattoo. I was busted."
Kayla that same day got a tattoo of Will's name on her arm. It was her birthday and she had just turned 21. She claimed that she was drunk. Will had tricked her into getting this tattoo and he was not going to stay with her.

To my peers
Yes, I recommend this to my peers. Especially to a girl because as they grow up and go into college they can see what it really is like out there. They can also see how guys can be at times.

To adults
Yes, I recommend this to adults because it is very interesting and exciting book and it will sow adults what teens or young adults go through in life.

To other schools
No I would not recommend this book to other schools because I don't think that this book is in any way a school related book. I would say for the students that if they want to read this book to read it on the side.

3.0 out of 5 stars Urban Modern Flavor, November 18, 2002
This review is from: Yo Yo Love (Paperback)
This Story centers around the main character Kayla. She is a 20 yr old female attending Temple University in Philadelphia. Kayla is constantly trying to find her 'true love. In the interim Kayla ends up meeting every fast-talking player in Philly. First, she meets Earl, a basketball hotshot at the University; this relationship was based mainly on sex, sex, and more sex. Then she meets Terry who can only be described as crazy -- during one of their excursions, he calls her a not so ladylike name when she refuses to have sex with him. When she meets Will, she feels he is the 'true' one. Only to be disappointed and find out that he is married. Yet, that doesn't stop her from going back to him three times after he lies and says he has broken up with his wife. The story ends when she gives up all hope on [them] and tries to get with her newfound man, Samir. The language of this novel possesses an urban, modern flavor enjoyed by young people. I give it a 3.5...
