4.0 out of 5 stars Very fun!, July 28, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
This book is an awesome resource for teachers or for students trying to study for the SAT on their own. The examples might not be usable in five years, but for now this book uses hilarious real-life examples from pop culture to give difficult words context. Students hate doing mind-numbing worksheets, so this book would be excellent for the teacher who wants to go beyond simple fill-in-the blank worksheets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vocabulary building becomes addictive, April 1, 2008
By
This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
This book has been great. I bought it for my 7th grade daughter and she's been reading it and repeating the jokes. She's spreading them around her school too. She had kids on the school bus repeating the jokes and even a girlfriend who has absolutely no interest in anything academic was repeating the Yo Momma jokes in this book with big vocabulary words. What a fun way to learn vocabulary.

By the way, the jokes in this book are really clean and the attitude is really positive. It seems like it could be crude, but it's not. It's just a way to put new vocabulary words in the hands of today's kids so they can learn the words.

4.0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for AP ENGLISH or Pre-SAT High Schoolers, December 24, 2007

This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
I purchased this hoping to be able to use it with my at risk hs English students. I would not recommend it for that. I could adapt some of the material to that level, but...

I do highly recommend it for any student planning to take the SAT. It is a great book for any student who likes hip hop or rap that plans to take the SAT or who takes AP level courses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great explanations for SAT vocab that kids can understand, January 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
The Yo-mama part of the book is a bit overdone and many of the insults went over my student's head. I had to explain the insults. For example, one insult is "Yo mama's so voracious that her blood type is Ragu." They don't get it. So, I had to explain the definition and then explain the insult. Hum . . . A bit backwards if you ask me. Yet, the beauty of the text is in its examples. When explaining terms, the author connects it back to celebrities and pop culture. It does not give a lofty definition; instead it's rather detailed.

I am not required to teach SAT words. I did it for two years in row, and copied pages from this book over the terms I wanted to cover. It was a bit awkward because not all SAT words in the book had insults and some words contained other SAT words as related words to the main word, so hacking the book apart for cut and paste required a bit of effort to streamline how I presented it to the class.

This book is very clever and will be appealing to Jr. and High School students. They will learn vocabulary in spite of themselves with this!

4.0 out of 5 stars 12 year old loves it!, April 5, 2008

This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my 12 year old son, and he loves it. The "yo momma" jokes are very big with him and his friends right now. I was really shocked at how quickly and easily they learned and retained the word definitions. His English teacher has noticed a big difference too. Great book, at a great price!

This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
I am an international student and tried many English vocabulary books. This book was one of those best books which teaches you abstruse English words in a very easy, funny way. You think that somebody is teaching you English words face to face:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning with humor, June 16, 2010
By
Scotchguard (Lawrence, Kansas USA) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Yo Momma Vocabulary Builder (Paperback)
This book contains about 250-300 SAT-level vocabulary words. The authors introduce the words in "yo momma" jokes, as in: "Yo momma is so diminutive, she uses Chapstick as deodorant." Following the "yo momma" joke, the vocabulary word is defined and discussed, often in a humorous way that helps cement the word in your brain. Scattered throughout the book are a few (emphasis on few) review exercises. While not all the jokes are killer funny, all in all, a fun way to learn vocabulary and a method that is likely to help vocabulary students remember the words and their meanings. The only thing lacking is perhaps a workbook to increase the interaction with the words in a written way.
