5.0 out of 5 stars When Rap was about making money
These tracks on the CD took me back when there was little to no cursing in rap songs and were making people lose their minds with the creativity. A must have for ALL rap and hip hop heads.

2.0 out of 5 stars MTV drops the ball again-EDITED CD
This disc sickens me beyond belief.

Against my better judgement, I purchased this CD. It boasts a hit laden track list, with a roster of popular stars and, indeed, spans mainstream rap throughout the years.

Sadly, most of these tracks are alternative, sanitized versions or edited for content. This was a major turn off and I was disgusted after my initial listen...

This was a major turn off and I was disgusted after my initial listen. I felt as though I had been duped. This material should be presented in their original unedited form, the way that the artists intended. But what did I really expect from squeaky clean MTV. My gut told me not to buy it and I didn't listen.

So I wanted to like it. Very much did I want to like it.

After a few listens, I realize that, just like the Headbanger's Ball double disc, this is nothing more than a weak attempt to milk a genre's popularity and line the pockets of this global media whore. MTV, you deserve no stars.

So, why 2 stars for this album?

One star because that's the lowest that Amazon will allow.

The other, is simply for Slick Rick, who is a marvelous storyteller and is one of the most sampled and bitten artists in history. He has led a troubled life, past and present, with the INS, and deserves recognition in every possible way.

Rick, the second star is for you. May you and your family be blessed.

~ Chris

4.0 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past, April 27, 2005
This review is from: Yo Mtv Raps: A Journey Back in Rhyme (Audio CD)
The tracks on this album are a blast from the past. In my opinion, there needs to be a volume 2. I feel that there are some other songs that could have been added to it (but that can just be done w/ a volume 2).

Volume 2 should include things like Brand Nubian-Slow Down, Anything by MC Lyte, TCQ-Bonita Applebum, More KRS-One & Boogie Down Productions, Something by Eric B. & Rakim, Poor Righteous Teachers-Rock This Funky Joint, and Self Destruction as a bonus track (LOL)...
