Book Description

5 and up
The yo-yo joins The Jump Rope Book & The Jump Rope and The Marble Book & The Marbles -- introducing The Yo-Yo Book & The Yo-Yo. Packaged with all the equipment a child needs, one ready-to-roll yo-yo, it is the third in the series that celebrates great American games of childhood. The book is steeped in the "state of yo," a place where technique, culture, challenge, and lore intersect. Beginning with the fundamentals (how to hold it, throw it, wind it, string it) it covers the two most important skills, the Gravity Pull and the Sleeper, and then moves on to dozens of tricks, including Walk the Dog, Orbit Launch, Buzz Saw, and Double or Nothing. The tricks are arranged by difficulty and are taught through a combination of easy-to-follow instructions and detailed black-and-white drawings. The yo-yo itself is made of hardwood and comes with the only truly acceptable yo-yo string - long-fiber cotton. The Classic Game series have over 317,000 copies in print.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book to avoid, November 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Yo-Yo Book & the Yo-Yo (Paperback)
This is a terrible start to yo-yoing. The yo-yo it comes with is almost unusable as it does not have a smooth axle (there are grooves down it, making the most basic tricks almost impossible). Once you get past this joke of a yo-yo you realize that the book is filled with errors. The author does not know what a transaxle really is, tricks are misnamed and badly explained, and there are many things just wrong. The major errors can be found in almost every chapter starting with inaccuracies in the history. This part bothers me the most because Lucky Meisenheimer, the foremost yo-yo historian is thanked for his help in the forward, yet things are in the history that directly contradict common thought, Luckys book, and all historical evidence. The tricks are just sloppy. Many of the illustrations are impossible to follow, or in a good case are drawn from angles so that either you cant figure out how to hold the yo-yo, or that the art just obscures the part of the illustration you really need to see.

Go get the Yonomicon, the Klutz book, or Larry Saycos' book first (The last is for small children).

Actually, I found it rather entertaining. And the yo-yo wasn't meant for a 'current' World's Champion ... Just Say Yô¿ô !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice general introduction to the yo-yo., May 31, 1999
This review is from: The Yo-Yo Book & the Yo-Yo (Paperback)
I do have some personal bias, but this is a nice introduction to the world of the yo-yo. This book is not aimed at the advanced yo-yo player, if you want advanced tricks check out the Yonomicon. Also don't buy this book for the attached yo-yo unless you need an extra cat toy. If you are looking for an introduction to yo-yos, basic tricks, a few bits of yo-yo trivia, and a book that will fit in your back pocket then you will be happy with this book. .
