Editorial Reviews

A life's work in a box-a box almost as beautiful as the music within. Inside the case-made, velvet-lined, lift-off box are 90 CDs in mini-jackets with original cover art. The discs contain nothing less than the recorded history of Yo-Yo Ma: 88 CDs of albums (including 15 Grammy winners) plus two CDs of bonus tracks-all remastered with DSD technology. The sum total of the music defies categorization: Hush with Bobby McFerrin, Appalachian Walts and Appalachian Journey with Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer, his stunning tributes to the music of Brazil ( Obrigado Brazil and Obrigado Brazil Live in Concert ), his hit collaboration album Songs of Joy & Peace and on and on. The 312-page hardbound book boasts rare photos, essays, artist bios, track lists, original liners, a glowing foreword by Emanuel Ax and messages from Ted Kennedy, James Taylor, Alan Alda, Alison Krauss, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis and many other admirers. Each limited-edition box comes individually numbered with a letter of authenticity a truly magnificent release from a once-in-a-generation talent.

It is nice without the photo and it is all housed in a nice looking box.

Yo Yo Ma is one of the world's musical wonders and there is quite a variety of music included here.
It is by far the best presented box set I have ever bought, truly a collector's item.

It is very difficult to write a comprehensive review of this collection of albums. I use the word albums because many of the discs in the collection were initially released in either vinyl or on cassettes. Lots already exist on cd. The discs are housed in reproductions of the LP and can scratch the discs if the user is not conscious of this. I haven't had any problems with scratches myself.

What are you getting here? This is a relatively gimmick free box set. You get a remastered 90 disc collection of 30 years of recordings from the greatest cellist in my lifetime and therefore this has a very eclectic range of styles. Heavy on the classical recordings, but mixed in are his Brazilian efforts, Jazz and the collaborations with Mark O'Conner and many other amazing artists. But at the center of each disc is the whimsical and wonderful cello played by Yo-Yo Ma.

* 90 CDs - every original album Yo-Yo Ma has recorded to date plus 2 Bonus Discs of unreleased and rare recordings
* Entirely remastered with DSD technology
* 312-page hard-bound book
* Archival photos, essays, full track lists, original liner notes, and more
* Beautifully designed, velvet-lined box
* Numbered limited-edition

The only way to know what number you are getting is to open it up, but each one is individually numbered. The first few hundred included an autographed photo and a thank you letter, but the initial price at release was much more higher. It is nice without the photo and it is all housed in a nice looking box. There are ribbons inside to help keep the place of the disc you are currently listening to.

It sounds fantastic and has so much incredible music that you are getting weeks of listening pleasure most of which holds up on repeated plays. Put your headphones on and enter the world of a Master. He will take you places you haven't heard before...

Some only listen to rock and roll or jazz or blues or opera or pop or heavy metal but I listen to all type of music and still enjoy it.This box set has broaden my musical taste in appreciating world music and cello is my favourite instrument as it can express sad ,happy emotion.I never heard Edgar Meyer but I really enjoy his music on CD 67.Yo Yo Yo has become my favourite and had really work to achieve such high standard of playing.The book My Son Yo Yo by Maria Ma gives us an excellent glimpse of his,he nearly died when he was a baby due to poverty and he knew what he want from childhood and his hard work.Amazon USA sell this box set cheaper and is a bargain.I only have 2 complains.The box is too big for 90CD and as suggested in the book there is site to assess the text which does not exist.I have been listening to this box set for 2 weeks and enjoyed all the CD I have listened so far.Buy it now before it is sold and then you have a fortune for third part seller from Amazon.There is not such a thing about bad music but only people who has bad hearing.Come on 2 plus 2 is not only 4 but can be 5 minus 1.I have broaden my horizon in listening to this box set.

The profession of classical musician has evolved/involuted to performing music of mostly dead dudes for audiences that have mostly passed their halfway point many years ago. Whereas late 19th century concert attendees might have heard Brahms play a new piano concerto and conduct a new symphony on a single night, current attendees mostly prefer the same old, same old few pieces, preferably in solidly middle of the road performances. The psychological effects of sustaining a classical career often take their toll and burn outs are a dime a dozen. This box illustrates how a very talented musician, who is open-minded and eclectic can sustain life long enthusiasm for “good” music, and importantly provides a road map for generations to come.

This box represents the upper-luxury category. It is beautifully presented, velvet and all, contains a beautiful hard cover book, with plenty of information on the recordings and excellent indexing. CDs are presented in sturdy original covers. All recordings are DSD remastered and sound excellently. It is likely that use of the SACD format could have further improved quality, but it appears that marketing departments have made the decision not to big-box sacds. In the light of the rapid disappearance of sacd manufacturing facilities it is likely that high resolution downloads will be the way of the future.

Although he was ready to jump on the stage early for a prodigious career Yo-Yo Ma decided to go to college to study anthropology; this wise choice clearly resulted in a musician with a perspective that open vistas far beyond that of “classical” tunnel vision. Importantly, it resulted in an “organic” participation in other genres that has never had any commercially flavored cross-over gimmickery.
