Book Description

Eugene Winkleman is all set for a boring two-week vacation in Rochester, New York, when strange coincidences start to happen. First, he and his Uncle Mel see a movie about a monster called "Yobgorgle" that is supposed to live in Lake Ontario. Then Eugene actually meets the man who made the movie -- none other than the great Ambrose McFwain of the Piscean Discovery Institute. Professor McFwain is looking for an assistant to help him with his latest monster hunt. He hires Eugene! Between bites of Greaso-Whammy Burgers, Eugene has the craziest, strangest and funniest summer vacation that any boy has ever had.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Funniest Children's Books of All Time May 28, 2000
Format:Paperback
I know this book is really hard to find, but if you do come across it, please don't hesitate to pick it up. I loved reading it when I was in elementary school several years ago, and I enjoy it all over again when I read it to my kids now.
It is the story of Eugene Winkleman spending a two-week vacation with his Uncle Mel in New York. They see a movie about a sea monster named "Yobgorgle" that resides in Lake Ontario. Eugene then meets Professor Ambrose McFwain, the man who made the movie. Eugene quickly becomes his assistant, and embarks on the wildest summer adventure of all time, loaded with many unexpected twists.
This book is loaded with strange, off-the-wall humor and wacky languange that makes it enjoyable for children of all ages. Each chapter will leave you wondering what crazy things will happen next. Trust me, the fun doesn't stop. Your kids will love the madcap events, wild storyline, and pure craziness.

4.0 out of 5 stars The hunt for Rochester's monster. April 3, 2004
Format:Paperback
The Daniel M. Pinkwater books seem to have lost some of their popularity with subsequent generations-- too bad, because this was (and is) one of the funniest books for children that can be found.

Eugene Winkleman goes on vacation to Rochester, NY with his Uncle Mel-- a confirmed junk food junkie and vending machine repair man. While there, he gets involved in the search for Yobgorgle, the mysterious monster of Lake Ontario. Along the way he meets Professor Ambrose McFwain, Colonel Ken Krenwinkle, Captain Sinbad Weinstein and the Flying Dutchman.

Rochester natives will get extra points out of the book for recognizing the secret room in the children's library and the circular ramp parking garage ("He agreed that the spiral garage was the best thing in town.")

Pick it up if you can find it-- well worth the money!
