Editorial Reviews

Today, more than 300.000 men, women and children are locked up in North Korea's concentration camps. Systematic slave labour, torture, starvation and murder is what faces the inmates. Few survive many years in the camps, but the population is kept stable by a steady influx of new persons considered to be 'class enemies'. A small group of people have managed to flee from the camps to a new life in the prosperous South Korea. Some of them gather and decide to make an extraordinary and controversial musical about their experiences in the Yodok concentration camp. Despite death threats and many obstacles the musical becomes a tour de force for this ensemble of refugees. For them a sought after possibility opens to talk about their experiences and inspire others to protest the existence of the camps. | "This is a real eye opener. A tremendous movie and a breathtaking experience. An exceptionally important documentary. It´s a film that demands to be seen." - Movie Geeks United! | "Awe-inspiring and phenomenally bittersweet." - Moving Pictures Magazine | "A musical about concentration camps in North Korea? It sounds almost perverse, but is explosively good. - Masterpiece" - Aftenposten | "Imaginatively peers deep inside North Korean communism. - A startling consideration of inhumanity." - Variety | ALSO SUBTITLED IN GERMAN, POLISH, NORWEGIAN, KOREAN, JAPANESE | BONUS MATERIAL: YODUK STORY - THE MUSICAL (153 min)

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing some Korean translations January 8, 2012
By scram
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Riveting documentary. HOWEVER..... Multiple blank areas halfway through that are NOT translated to the Korean language. The DVD does advertise Korean. This was very disappointing for me as I plan to bring this to China for my Korean - inlaws to watch. I would have expected for a product made professionally with such a cost to have not left these translation gaps! Would have gotten 5 stars if not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching documentary May 31, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
This documentary tells the TRUE story of all of those North Koreans that survived their stay in the Yodok prison camp. Few people have lived to tell of the horror they experienced in various prison camps in North Korea. This documentary shows several of these survivors who are now living in South Korea, and how they are spreading the word on what North Korea is really like.

Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening and Interesting April 19, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
This film should be required for everyone or at least all high school and international studies students.
It gives profound insight into the world and thinking of both the North Korean military and civilians.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sad but unfortuanatly true December 22, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
North Korea IS 1984. If you have a heart this film will rip it out. Not a film for a first date but will leave you wanting to know more about that strange closed country.
