5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga by the Sea, February 17, 2007
This review is from: Yoga With Ateeka (DVD)
Atteka invites you into a world of ocean waves, peaceful meditative postures and intermediate sun salutations. She then proceeds to a more advanced practice to give a challenge to even the most dedicated student. Each move requires complete dedication and while the sun salutations require more endurance than balance, this soon changes when you begin to experience the more complex postures:

Parsvottanasana
Virabhadrasana
Natarajasana
Halasana

I would only recommend this workout to anyone who is moving from intermediate to advanced and who has achieved a deeply rooted sense of balance and an overall body strength equal to the task. Slow does not mean easy and the backward bends, spinal twists and inversions require dedication and an advanced sense of patience.

Intermediate to Advanced!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, this is a fantastic yoga practice, s/b 5 stars, December 4, 2004
This review is from: Yoga With Ateeka (DVD)
This is a challenging practice (not power yoga) that starts out with a short warm up with breathing and stretching, then moves into 4 rounds of sun salutations. Next is the challenging warrior series, balancing (dancer pose), then to floor poses. The floor poses include forward bends, hip openers/lunges, inversions, and finally yoga mudra. The practice ends with shivasana and Ateeka gives enough time unlike many of the yoga DVDs on the market. In fact this whole practice gives enough time to connect your mind and body in each pose. Akeeta does not move quickly through the poses, but it is not a beginner/intro-level instruction. It is quite challenging, yet relaxing and she includes a lot of creative, alternative poses that I have not seen on other yoga DVDs including backbends, plough, and shoulder stand (with alternatives for beginners).

The practice is almost 1 hour, but the DVD production includes menus so you can choose which poses you like. I would not recommend this for beginners, but if you're already somewhat familiar with yoga, I promise you will love this one! Akeeta holds the poses for a good amount of time and the flow speed is not too fast. She explains the pose, but doesn't talk too much. Her voice is very soothing. On top of all that the scenery is beautiful and the music is lovely (relaxing music, bells, and ocean sound included).

You can't go wrong with this DVD. The price is great and the experience is wonderful. Producers of yoga DVD's, please use this as a good example of what to strive for in producing your next yoga DVD.

Please note: I could not change my rating on this review with Amazon. Could not delete or change, but it should be rated a 5 star (I would give it a 10 if I could!!!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Slow, Restorative, Beginner Level, December 24, 2005
This review is from: Yoga With Ateeka (DVD)
I had the impression this was a different kind of DVD than what I bought b/c there was no editorial info. I have 80 yoga DVD's alone at last count, another 50 plus dance/exercise DVD's so I will say this is in the category of a "Slow, Restorative, Beginner Level DVD." It would be really lovely for many seniors as well. The session is 55 minutes long but it is not challenging; it is a good way for a beginner to start to extend the length of their practice although Yoga Journal and Goldhil offer many other choices I would get first. Still...great addition for a beginner/senior/person looking for a gentle practice, this DVD has the Sanskrit names written on the screen for learning purposes, Ateeka is pleasant and she also describes the health benefits of most poses. Set up--single instructor on a beach sight in Maui, production value is of a reasonably high quality as well. Advanced and Intermediate Level yogis, and those moving much closer towards Intermediate will want to look elsewhere. Everyone else should be really pleased.
