1.0 out of 5 stars A book for beginners by beginners?
There is some decent information in this book and ya, the spiral binder is handy. However, the photographs clearly show that these instructors don't have an understanding of asana other than just "put your body into a position" and call it good. Engagement, alignment, drawing in, and lengthening are vital to getting the most from asana, even for beginners, and clearly is...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best I've seen!, October 16, 2000
This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
I reviewed many yoga books before selecting this one. For starters, the binding is cleverly designed to allow you to keep it near your mat for a quick review of the posture.

The photos and descriptions of the postures are exceptionally clear. Variations on the postures are noted for those who have limited flexibility. The program of postures is well thought out and is excellent for beginners, and is rigorous enough for those who are serious about their practice.

One minor quibble--it would have been useful if the book contained information about the use of yoga props, such as straps, blocks and bolsters.

While yoga classes are great for learning different styles of yoga, and getting needed corrections and suggestions, I find this book to be the single best investment I have made in my yoga practice. Though I also use various yoga videos, this book is far superior to any of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners, June 13, 2001

This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
I have bought several yoga tapes marked as "Beginner" only to get frustrated by how quickly they go from one pose/position to another without regard for the real beginners. I thought I would never learn the terms and poses - and would have to ditch my tapes.

This book saved me!!! It provided step by step guides to each pose - visually so that you can walk yourself through the steps to acheive the position. It's a great first step to learning the basics. With this foundation I am now ready to tune into the tapes I have purchased and truly experience yoga!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, January 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
The perfect book for a beginner like me. Not full of backbends and headstands like some of the other books I've looked through.

I bought it to go along with a yoga video that I've been doing. Even though the video is great (PM Yoga) its sometimes difficult to figure out exactly how your foot should be angled, arms extended, etc. This book breaks down each pose into steps so you know exactly how your body should be positioned.

Plus there are two complete routines for beginners and intermediates so the book should be useful for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Beginners Book, July 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
I think this book is a great way to start yoga. It starts out very basic compared to some books which I have seen who call themselves basic(even easier than one of the books for seniors I have seen). One of the reasons I chose this book, is because the pictures, they are all clear and large and in color. I also enjoy the descriptions they give of how each pose will benefit you. ...they should include some more information about using props, since the do also mention that you should have props to start. However the book is not hurt buy that so much, becuase they do offer easier options for people with certain troublespots, and most beginners do not have all the props(in my case). I think this book will last me a long time because of the fact that it not only has a beginner section but also an intermediate to challenge me. I have really enjoyed learning yoga from this book, and I believe that it has really helped me to do the poses correctly with out any outside help. I really believe that this is one of the best yoga books out there, especially because everyone can benefit from these wonderful pictures, that show you step by step how to get into a pose(they also give you a written discription). I really encourage people who are just starting yoga to buy this book, because it has really enthused me about yoga and helped me in every aspect of my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Yoga, February 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
I have several books on Yoga, but this is the one I like to use. It is easy to look at while practicing due to it's unique binding. Also, the beginners routine is the best mix of postures for beginners that I have found. It's not too easy, but it isn't too hard. You are eased into yoga practice. At the end of a workout, I feel energized and relaxed. I can't wait until I am ready to try the intermediate workout. The relaxed feeling stays with me throughout the day. That's nice. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Book For Beginners, January 13, 2004
This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
If you have no prior experience and want to jump right into a routine, this is the book for you. In fact, it serves that purpose better than any other yoga book I've seen so far. It's design is simple yet clever, and allows the user to study the instructions and accompanying photos of the various poses while simultaneously attempting them. The descriptions and illustrations are understandable and well-organized.

This is strictly a beginner's book, and that point is clearly stated in the title, but for that reason it is fairly limited in scope. The authors cover several important poses in great detail, but you may want to explore further and cross-reference with other books. Another that I'd recommend highly is called Hatha Yoga Illustrated, which I've also reviewed.

Overall, Yoga For Beginners is a great starting place for those looking to dive in head first. It will give you a good sense of the time needed to learn and perform a full routine. You'll be attempting your first poses literally within minutes of cracking the book open!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use; Great for beginners or experts, January 6, 2003

I've read at least 15 books (as of 9.2004) on Yoga and this one is one of the most informative and easy to use. It also has advanced moves for when you progress. I use Yoga to compliment my long-distance running and weight lifting. I broke my back (L5-S1) about 5 years ago and needed surgery. I vowed to never let myself suffer again. With a combination of weight lifting and Yoga, I think you can almost guarantee success. You will not feel intimidated using this book. The moves are adequately explained and most importantly details what areas of the body are stretched/enhanced with each move.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners, February 22, 2002
This review is from: Yoga for Beginners (Spiral-bound)
This is a terrific book for those who are just beginning their yoga experience. It contains the basic asanas(poses) for strength and flexibility, working up from the beginner to the intermediate. I like the large, color pictures and the side notes with modifications. There is no substitute for a structured, teacher led, yoga class, but for those who want to do yoga at home between class days, this is a good book to use.

This book has an excellent layout, intelligent design and great descriptions about the asanas and the specific benefits from each pose. I got this one for just 4 bucks on an Amazon sale and its much more worth than that. I'm just a beginner at Yoga and this book helped me get going!
