3.0 out of 5 stars All Levels?
This video is suppose to be for all levels - which includes beginner level ("viewer from Seattle") last time I checked. However, I am a true beginner and I find her instruction is not adequate. The poses are challenging and if you have taken yoga before, the provided instruction may be fine. I don't find the modifications at the end of the video particularly...

4.0 out of 5 stars Gaiam/Living Arts -- a mixed bag, February 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga Conditioning for Women [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A hearty warning for yoga novices -- after several purchases of their yoga and pilates programs all I can say is that you never can tell what you're going to get from the Gaiam/Living Arts folks until you stick that VHS or DVD into your machine. However, you can count on beautiful locations (Hawaii, Arizona, a creek, some trees, the beach and a nice sunset...)

Don't let yoga-snots discourage you from looking for tapes that have lots of instructions. Not everyone has a yoga studio in town and frankly, it takes time to find a good teacher. Gaiam/Living Arts has a strong collection, but the formats are across the board.

If you liked the Deason/weight loss and want more 'indepth' style programs, Patricia Walden's "Yoga Basics II" is quite good -- same background as Deason's interms of Iyengar training. Same collection of standing poses, but she goes further into the restorative poses and the uses of props.

Yes, 'conditioning for women' is very different than the weight loss program. Its harder and there's no time to think about alignment but the tape is worthwhile if you are serious about your yoga practice and you want a new challenge.

4.0 out of 5 stars great!!! ..... but not for all levels, January 27, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga Conditioning for Women [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a really beautiful and flowing yoga workout, but needs a disclaimer: the box says "all levels", but it really should say "intermediate".

Deason gives no verbal instruction on how to attain or refine the poses, and the modifications given at the end are just pictures of deason in the poses, again no verbal instructions. Thus, this really isn't a video for all levels.

However, if you already know the basic poses, or don't mind spending the time on pause-rewind to figure them out from watching Deason, then this is a great practice. If you like to hold each pose for a long time, to really sink into it, then this is not the video for you. But if you want to move through poses in a peaceful yet challenging flow, this is the perfect video for you. Deason's poise and flexibility are inspiring.

My only complaint is that Deason times the transitions to her breath, so if you aren't breathing at the same pace as she, you might have a hard time keeping up (I always seem to be inhaling when she says exhale and move, and by the time I get to exhale and move, she's moved on to something else).

3.0 out of 5 stars All Levels?, January 31, 2003

The poses are challenging and if you have taken yoga before, the provided instruction may be fine. I don't find the modifications at the end of the video particularly useful. She doesn't talk you through the moves, and while some are basic and don't require verbal ques, I think for the more difficult poses it would be useful. I wouldn't recommend this video for any "true" beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great, July 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga Conditioning for Women [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I enjoyed this video and have already done the workout a few times. I was disappointed that Suzanne Deason did not give as many instructions when doing this routine as she has in the past and as Rodney Yee does. Several times while I am bent into a pretzel I can't quite figure out what I am supposed to do next without looking and if you look, you strain yourself. This video definitely has to be viewed a few times before doing the routine.

4.0 out of 5 stars More interesting & challenging than Yoga for Weight Loss, July 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga Conditioning for Women [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I'm tired of all the crybaby complaints about a lack of instruction in many of the reviews I read. I don't mean just this video, but a lot of them. If you want a beginner video, then buy one. If you need help, then take a class to get the basics down. It isn't fair to expect each and every video to bore the rest of us to death by giving tedious and basic beginner instructions. At some point, you either know it or you don't. When you get in your car, do you need a driver's ed class each time? As far as I'm concerned, I don't need the same instructions repeated each and every day.

I also don't want or need videos that keep me in the same place; I want to buy videos that challenge me to improve. Yes, this is harder than Yoga for Weight Loss - waaah - and after doing that tape for several months I now find it much too slow and not at all challenging. This one suits me better, even though I can't do all the poses just yet.

I agree that having the modifications at the end isn't much help, but if you view the tape two or three times it shouldn't be an issue.

The other complaint I have about this video is I get tired of hearing her repeat throughout the practice "Place your palms on the belly. Feeeeelll your center".

3.0 out of 5 stars to the viewer from seattle, August 26, 2002

To the reviewer from seattle, grow up! Reviews are written to help other people know if they would like that video or not. It is obvious that this video would be compared to Ms. Deason's previous video. I didn't find anyone crying in these reviews except the 'viewer from seattle'. Suzanne Deason is a wonderful yoga teacher, but I personally did not enjoy this video as much as her yoga conditioning for weight loss, which I see as continually challenging because you can always do yoga on a deeper level.
