5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Yogic cooking
It was high time for someone to write a book based on the principles of Yogic cooking. Being a Yoga Teacher myself and following the Yogic principles on eating sometimes students wonder how you can create great tasting dishes without onions, garlic, leeks, mushrooms, vinegar etc, now I can tell them just get this book. The recipies are visually well presented and easy...

i really wanted to love this book. the pictures of the dishes throughout the book are amazing. this book does have some great info on yogic diet and fasting, but as i made a number of the dishes in this book i wondered if they really tested them out. the directions sometimes seem to leave out steps and/or ingredients, which makes it hard to follow. maybe i've just been unlucky with the recipes i've chosen over the last 6 months, but the what i've made from this book has not turned out (and i'm not a novice cook). it really is too bad that the recipes don't live up to the picture that go along with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, great advice, interesting recipes!, April 18, 1999

This book is marvelous. Most of the ingredients don't require a trip to a foreign country. The taste, amazing. This book also has a lot of information on yoga, if that is of your interest. It is mostly vegan. I'd say about 99%.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and delicious recipes, September 23, 1999

This review is from: The Yoga Cookbook: Vegetarian Food for Body and Mind (Paperback)
I've been using this book for about 6 months. The simple, easy to follow recipes are all delicious, making use of the flavours of fresh ingredients in a subtle but very tantilising way. There is also a great variety of recipes; you would eat very well using only these. The colour photos are also mouth-watering, I just wish there were more of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Recipes are not great - missing steps, incorrect portions, etc, August 12, 2005
This review is from: The Yoga Cookbook: Vegetarian Food for Body and Mind (Paperback)
I 100% agree with the last reviewer. I really REALLY wanted to like this book and to use it everyday. I have had nothing but problems trying to cook with this book. The steps are incredibly vauge, the amount for any particular ingrediant is out of proportion. I'm writing this review after attempting the banana-nut tart on pg 108. First of all, the amount of left-over mix for the crust is unbelievable - I could have cut the amount of ingrediants in half. There is no binder, so the whole thing fell apart. And the filling is just the same! I am a very experienced baker and cook, and I am so frustrated that this isn't working out! The pictures are gorgeous, and the information on diet is very helpful, but overall it is not worth your money. Sorry!

As an omnivore, I don't really care how "yogic" this book may or may not be, and I'm a very casual, perhaps creative cook who doesn't bother much about measuring. That said, I got this book from the library and am now purchasing it as the recipes I tried gave new life to veggies in my house and everyone's happily asking for second helpings. Really interesting flavors and the kitchen smells divine! For days!

I was inspired to try some recipes from regular Indian cookbooks, but found them too complex. This book is easy, useful, and makes me seem like a good cook. What more can you ask? You must try the delish sambar, made with lentils and veggies and a ton of spices. Love at first bite at our house where formerly the little darlings left legumes on the plate.

I tried the oatmeal cookies but found the eggless butterless recipe too oily -- beautiful cookies though. An experienced baker would have known before making them that the recipe wasn't right for his or her taste.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Yoga Cook Book, May 15, 2008
This review is from: The Yoga Cookbook: Vegetarian Food for Body and Mind (Paperback)
I bought this book twice because I lost my first copy. This book is worth it's money just for one recepie and that is the tofu prune cake. Soooooooo delicious!!!!!!!!!! Most bevarages and breakfasts are also delicious. But some of the soups and entries are rather bland (no onions, no garlic) or work with ingrediant combinations (ginger) I don't care for to much.
If like to eat fresh food and don't like to use any caned or otherwise processed foods and need to be very careful with your food choices and don't eat meat - this book is for you.
This book does offer vegan choices is however based on a lacto-vegetarian diet.

After taking the Yoga Teacher Training at the Sivananda Ashram in Grass Valley, CA, I had to have this book so that I could attempt to re-create some of the amazing food once I returned home. The principles on which these recipes are based are explained fully at the beginning of the book, the recipes themselves are easy and the results are wonderful balanced meals made with good food and good seasonings. I highly recommend this book.

I am not sure why other reviewers had problems with this book--I found it very easy and clear to use. The instructions are simple and easy to follow. The food looks like the pictures--if you want to present it with the garnishes etc.. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to eat a healthier and more flavorful diet!!

1.0 out of 5 stars all show, no substance, March 10, 2011

As another reviewer said, "great pictures, bad recipes." This book looks and sounds nice and has some useful information, but the recipes are either bland or just plain awful. I knew when buying the book that it was written for strict yogis who are not only vegetarian, but also don't eat foods like onion, garlic, or strong seasonings. Even though I am not this strict a vegetarian, I thought the recipes could still be interesting and tasty so I gave it a try. Big mistake. I consider myself a pretty good cook, but I had problems with every one of the 3 or 4 dishes I attempted. There's no way these recipes could have been tested. The Eggplant Quinoa was the last and absolute worst; it was barely edible. I threw most of it away, wasting valuable food. Feeling I'd given the book a fair trial, I promptly pitched it into the recycling bin as I wouldn't dare pass it on to anyone else.
