Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Yoga for Dummies proves that this 5,000-year-old Indian discipline can be all things to all people--the athlete striving for more-limber limbs, the stressed-out professional needing mental calm, peace, and clarity; the pregnant mom-to-be looking to keep herself toned and her emotions balanced, the spiritual seeker wanting to access the higher planes of consciousness.

Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., and Larry Payne, Ph.D., are internationally recognized yoga experts. After explaining how to prepare your body and mind for yoga--including warnings about how to practice safely--they jump straight into the postures (asanas), instructions for which make up the meat of book (relaxation, breathing, movement, sequencing, compensation, sitting). Feuerstein and Payne carefully and in great detail lead the reader through every step, although they do advise first-timers to supplement the book with actual classes until they have the basics down. Throughout the book, clear explanations accompany black-and-white photos and drawings. (Unfortunately, following the written instructions is hard enough when your feet are in the air or your head's down by your ankles, and the book would have been improved if the pictures always appeared on the same page as their instructions.)

Readers then learn about tailoring a yoga program to their needs; using props; practicing "Yoga Throughout the Day"; incorporating yoga into sex, meditation, menopause, and pregnancy; using yoga to treat back problems and PMS; and practicing yoga with kids. The book also covers yogic ethics, philosophy, and resources. It's not all asanas and pranas, though--Yoga for Dummies is sprinkled with the humor characteristic of the For Dummies series (a section explaining that the ego is the ultimate source of stress is titled "Wherever ego, I go") and practical advice (the Forgiving Limbs maneuver allows you to bend your legs and arms a bit rather than try to fully extend them, so that you can perform postures you're not yet quite limber enough for). This is both an excellent beginner's guide and a good reference for more advanced yoginis who want a brush-up course. --Stefanie Durbin --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

As a doctor and life-long yoga practitioner, I am very impressed by the wide range of knowledge and substantive information provided by the authors in Yoga For Dummies. I always thought the "Dummies" were just that...something for novices and people who needed basic instruction. But, in bringing together two of the most credible teachers that have ever taught yoga in the West, Larry Payne (founding president of the International Association of Yoga Therapist) and Georg Feuerstein (author of more than 40 books), this book offers something for all levels of yoga practitioners that you can't find anywhere else in one book. The new-to-yoga people will find that there is a lot of info on the background and philosophy of yoga provided by Dr. Feuerstein along with sequences that are specifically designed for beginners - complete with both what "to do" and the ever important what "not to do" when performing the poses. For those who have experience in yoga, Dr. Payne shares some fabulous dynamic yoga asana sequences that are directly from India in the lineage of T. Krishnamacharya, who was the teacher of B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattahbi Jois, T.K.V. Desikachar and Indra Devi among millions of others. His routines are authentic, challenging, sensible and healthy for your body when performed in coordination with his precise directions, which are clearly laid out in the book.

All in all, whether you are new to yoga or even a yoga teacher, I think this is one of the best yoga books you can buy!! For under 20 bucks this book is a steal and can provide you with a lot of great information in the philosophy, art and practice of yoga!

An Excellent Primer! October 8, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After trying several videos, I decided to give this book a try and I am glad I did. It's a great introduction to Yoga without a bunch of creepy hippie stuff. It describes each posture thoroughly and gives extra information where appropriate. Unlike a video, you can go at your own pace without feeling rushed or pressured.

I have read several of Feuerstein's other yoga books - always full of information, but a little dry and tedious. This book cuts straight to the chase and gives the reader quick, easy to understand tidbits. If you want to have quick to the point answers about yoga, this is your book, written by one of the foremost respected yoga scholars.

Lots of misinformation
According to "The Science of Yoga". Payne's PhD is from a diploma mill and the book has lots of misinformation. Check out "The Science of Yoga" to cut through the misinformation.
