Book Description

Rodmell Press Yoga Shorts March 17, 2008
Fibromyalgia, which affects more women than men, is characterized by widespread pain in muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points — places on the body where slight pressure causes pain. Although mainstream medicine has yet to devise a successful plan for treating fibromyalgia, yoga offers sensible strategies for managing, and sometimes overcoming, the pain. Written by a yoga teacher and suitable for both yoga novices and veterans, this book is grounded in simple movements, breathing techniques, and guided visualization and relaxation sessions. Readers learn to reduce stress and manage fibromyalgia through eight sequences: four for pain relief, one to diminish fatigue and improve sleep, and three for maintaining body awareness and general flexibility. The author's simple, supportive language and mixture of theory, practice, and the latest scientific data offer hope for one of the most challenging health conditions.

More About the Author

Shoosh Lettick Crotzer began teaching yoga in 1974 after traveling in India. She is one of the original "hippies" who stuck with it (and is still a vegetarian as well!) Her studies began with some of the original leaders of the Sivananda organization and continued with Iyenar master teachers in the early 1970s, then with Ganga White and Tracey Rich of the White Lotus Foundation, Joel Kramer, and many others. She has taught in a variety of locations, from yoga centers to sports clinics to universities to cancer centers. While working with the National MS Society in 1994, Shoosh founded the production and distribution company, Mobility Limited, and wrote and produced the video "Yoga for MS" which is still widely used around the country. She then wrote and produced "Yoga for Arthritis" for the Arthritis Foundation that includes a Spanish version. This video is recommended by rheumatologists and used extensively in both this country and Spanish-speaking countries. Since it shows one of the models seated, it is also used as a chair routine. Shoosh has made presentations on yoga for arthritis and for MS at national conferences. In 2008, she wrote "Yoga for Fibromyalgia" for Rodmell Press after having worked with those suffering from fibro for many years. This book has also been translated into Spanish. In 1998, Shoosh founded the nonprofit organization, Enhancement, Inc, where she remains as Executive Director. Enhancement produces and distributes educational programs in the field of health and wellness with an emphasis on quality of life issues for breast cancer survivors. Shoosh is presently working on her next book: "The Breast Cancer Survivor's Yoga Handbook" which she hopes will be out in 2012. Shoosh lives in San Luis Obispo County, CA, and continues to teach yoga classes and workshops there and throughout the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Recommendation from My Student with Fibromyalgia, April 22, 2008
This review is from: Yoga for Fibromyalgia: Move, Breathe, and Relax to Improve Your Quality of Life (Rodmell Press Yoga Shorts) (Paperback)
I recommended Yoga for Fibromyalgia to one of my students. Even though she is already familiar with restorative yoga and how to use yoga props, she felt this book was very worthwhile, especially for her home practice. Here is what she said: "It's nice to see it all laid out and easy to follow. This book would be a benefit to any teachers with fibromites like me in their classes. It also applies to anyone with a disease like FMS; arthritis, chronic fatigue, etc. I also like it for new people because it's written simply, easy to understand, short and concise. Some books are so long and have way too much info for people just starting out. Not to mention trying to read and understand when you are in a flare up with brain fog!"

Thank you, Shoosh Lettick Crotzer, for writing this helpful book!

I have really enjoyed this book. It doesn't require too much effort for those of us who are limited in our ability to move.

I applaud the concept of Yoga for Fibro. I can't seem to do the exercises without constantly referring to the book which kind of destroys the relaxation part of yoga. Wish there was a DVD or even a CD. It suggests that you record your own voice with the instructions, but who has a tape recorder these days? I would do much better listening to a soothing voice telling me what to do or focus on than listening to my own voice. Great idea, bad medium.
