As a doctor and life-long yoga practitioner, I am very impressed by the wide range of knowledge and substantive information provided by the authors in Yoga For Dummies. I always thought the "Dummies" were just that...something for novices and people who needed basic instruction. But, in bringing together two of the most credible teachers that have ever taught yoga in the West, Larry Payne (founding president of the International Association of Yoga Therapist) and Georg Feuerstein (author of more than 40 books), this book offers something for all levels of yoga practitioners that you can't find anywhere else in one book. The new-to-yoga people will find that there is a lot of info on the background and philosophy of yoga provided by Dr. Feuerstein along with sequences that are specifically designed for beginners - complete with both what "to do" and the ever important what "not to do" when performing the poses. For those who have experience in yoga, Dr. Payne shares some fabulous dynamic yoga asana sequences that are directly from India in the lineage of T. Krishnamacharya, who was the teacher of B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattahbi Jois, T.K.V. Desikachar and Indra Devi among millions of others. His routines are authentic, challenging, sensible and healthy for your body when performed in coordination with his precise directions, which are clearly laid out in the book.

All in all, whether you are new to yoga or even a yoga teacher, I think this is one of the best yoga books you can buy!! For under 20 bucks this book is a steal and can provide you with a lot of great information in the philosophy, art and practice of yoga!

I have been using various yoga videos and DVDs for more than 20 years now. I practiced yoga sporadically, always using these videos to lead me and without understanding the deeper philosophies and reasons behind each pose.

I decided that I wanted to move beyond that and in to "real" Yoga practice. I bought the "Dummies" guide because I've never been disappointed with a "Dummies" guide yet. This book was no exception.

The book is quite readable and very enjoyable. It covers everything you need to know to develop a "real" Yoga practice - from the foundations of yoga in ancient history to the why and how of each yoga position. Breathing was covered in great detail as well, which really helped me. [None of my tapes ever explained the importance of breath].

The pictures of the different poses are very helpful. I appreciated the fact that they used models that were "real human beings" as opposed to airbrushed super humans that make Yoga look like something mere mortals can't do. I also particularly enjoyed the way they separated out different suggested yoga routines for different age groups and life stages - from kids to older people to pregnant women. That was very helpful.

I think this book would be helpful for anyone who would like to understand what Yoga really is and how to practice it correctly. This was money well spent for me.

I also have to add, on a personal note, that I bought & read this book 10 months ago. Since then I have practiced yoga every single day consistently [as taught in this book]. The change in my body is AMAZING - the amount of flexibility I have acheived has truly astounded me [I am middle aged - I never thought I'd be this flexible again!]. I have also built quite a bit of attractive muscle.

After trying several videos, I decided to give this book a try and I am glad I did. It's a great introduction to Yoga without a bunch of creepy hippie stuff. It describes each posture thoroughly and gives extra information where appropriate. Unlike a video, you can go at your own pace without feeling rushed or pressured.

I was a big fan of the first edition of YFD and I know Yoga is thousands of years old -- so I was plenty curious about how it could be new or improved. Was I surprised! The new volume has many new sections. My favorite is Prime of Life Yoga. For those of us in midlife who cannot stand on our heads and have no interest in training for an Olympic event, this is the book! The routines are gentle yet challenging...I recommend it for anyone over 40 looking for ways to stay healthy, stay in shape and feel good!

I have read several of Feuerstein's other yoga books - always full of information, but a little dry and tedious. This book cuts straight to the chase and gives the reader quick, easy to understand tidbits. If you want to have quick to the point answers about yoga, this is your book, written by one of the foremost respected yoga scholars.

Finally I found a Yoga book that I can use with my whole family from tots to teens plus my husband! Love the section for kids, love the restorative poses for when I'm tired but need to do something. I give it FIVE STARS - from all five of us.

I have really enjoyed this book. Like all "dummies" books it starts form the very beginning for completely clueless individuals like myself and is very thorough. I would definitely put this on the must read list for beginners.
