This review is from: Yoga for Martial Artists [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Yoga For Martial Artists is an instructional video of yoga postures that promote harmony of body, mind, and spirit, as well as flexibility, strength, and balance - an ideal combination for enhancing one's martial arts training. Kripalu certified yoga teacher and black belt Dawn Lesinski ably and methodically guides the viewer through exercises that effectively work supplement martial arts training or other active fitness programs that seek to help prevent soreness and injury. An excellent introduction and self-teaching tool, Yoga For Martial Artists is a confidently recommended addition to any personal, dojo, or community library fitness and exercise video collection.

Easy, Slow, Basic, Modified Yoga for Beginning Students of Martial Arts, November 1, 2005
This review is from: Yoga for Martial Artists [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This production is for the beginning student. It is far too elementary for individuals who already have flexibility and strength acquired through martial arts. Consequently, its title is a misnomer. It should be called, "Easy, Slow, Basic, Modified Yoga for Beginning Students of Martial Arts". Evaluated solely on its ability to satisfy its given title, "Yoga for Martial Artists", I gave it two stars.
The criteria that I use to characterize a "beginner" - a combination of all of the following: 1)unfamiliarity with discipline and associated technique 2)physical limitations that may interfere with full range of movement and 3)a manageable level of pain as a consequence of moving in the new way.
Using that criteria, this is the ONLY yoga video I have ever seen that can authentically claim to be appropriate for the beginner. The initial warm-up is actually a very slow hybrid of exercises frequently used prior to martial arts classes. The rest of the class is a slow repetition (three times) of modified yoga postures (standing and sitting/lying down).
This is the tape for you if the thought of working through a practice after work is simply too excruciating. For beginning students - or anyone with physical limitations - I rate this at 5+ stars. For more advanced students, I recommend Rodney Yee's "Yoga Conditioning for Athletes" as a superior, immediate alternative. "Yoga Conditioning for Athletes" was recommended to me by my physical therapist - prior to realizing that I required two complete hip replacements - and after giving up Tae Kwon Do. Post-surgery, it remains my absolute favorite VHS and DVD of its type.
