Editorial Reviews

To be released on September 14th, Yoga is Putumayo's first CD release featuring songs selected to accompany yoga practice and serve as a relaxing soundtrack for daily life. Rooted in ancient Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, the practice of yoga has evolved over the past 5,000 years. Adopted by millions of people around the world, yoga provides a vehicle for greater health and spiritual awareness. Music has long had a close relationship with yoga, particularly in the Bhakti tradition, which incorporates musical chants into its practice. Yoga features renowned musicians from around the world. British-born, South Indian artist Susheela Raman duets with Kenyan singer Ayub Ogada on the harmonious "O Rama." Krishna Das, who is the best-known US performer of traditional Indian kirtan-style music, demonstrates call-and-response chanting on "Hanuman Baba (Dub Farm Remix)." Costa Rican group Amounsulu create a serene atmosphere by blending sitars and glass bottles on the song "El Bosque Eterno de los Niños (Children's Eternal Rainforest)." On "Bolo Ram" celebrated western devotional musician Wah! sings a tranquil verse that is believed to bring bliss to all who chant it. Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band are known for their beautiful, melodic chanting as displayed on "Om Hari Om/Sharanam Ganesha (Refuge)." Yoga also features the collaborative world fusion group The Lucknow Project, US kirtan artist Gaura Vani And As Kindred Spirits, renowned producer/musician Ben Leinbach and percussionist Geoffrey Gordon, bhajan and kirtan singer Karnamrita Dasi and British producer Niraj Chag. Rounding out this eclectic collection are Swedish musician and teacher Yogini, Senegalese singer Ablaye Cissoko with German trumpeter Volker Goetze, husband and wife duo Shantala and Bhutanese monk Lama Gyurme with French pianist Jean-Philippe Rykiel.

5.0 out of 5 stars MEDITATIVE MOOD MUSIC October 27, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
First, I applaud Putumayo for making a recording that exceeds 60 minutes. "Yoga" is 71:32 minutes as identified on the back jacket. I hope this sets a new trend for Putumayo, whose CDs average around 45 minutes.

"Yoga" is the best compilation of music intended for yoga that I have come across. It certainly fulfills the function to aid breath with movement. The repetitive sound (mantra/kirtan chants) is also conducive for meditation. Unlike other compilations which are a fusion of new age-easy listening-lounge music; this collection retains its purpose of devotional music, creating an ambience that can be appreciated by the practioner.

The musicians are superb. To Putumayo's credit, they list the albums from which the selections were taken......I will certainly order a couple of those listed.

I spend 20 minutes each morning on my yoga practice and find tracks 1-4, 5-10 and 11-14 are sufficient time for each session. These tracks are also appropriate for start-up of slower stretching movements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonic Nirvana October 1, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Putumayo's "Yoga" is one of the world music label's best compilations yet. It perfectly suits yoga, meditation, Pilates. It's incredibly serene, like a cup of jasmine tea. The music is deeply thoughtful, drawing on Hindu, Buddhist, and African traditions.

"Yoga" opens with the Lucknow Project's peaceful "Ghungate Ke." Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band from New Orleans have the jazzy "Om Hari Om." Susheela Raman's "O Rama" as well as Ablaye Cissoko&Volker Goetze's "Sira" blend African with Indian music. There are meditative instrumentals such as Ben Leinbach&Geoffrey Gordon's "Cerulean" and Amounsulu's "El Bosque Eternal de los Ninos",a tribute to a Costa Rican rainforest preserve. Amounsoulu makes a flavorful blend of Latin and Indian music. Wah! sings a powerful ode to Rama. Karnamrita Dasi, who grew up in an American ashram, sings an ode to Krishna's human mother, Devaki. Krishna Das, one of the premier American singers of Hindu kirtans (devotional songs) has a remix of his ode to Hanuman, the monkey god (Heart As Wide As The World,Live on Earth) "Offering Chant" is a unique collaboration between blind pianist Jean-Philippe Rykiel and Tibetan Buddhist Lama Gyurme. It sounds like an Anglican hymn. One can imagine it being sung in some proper Episcopal church. It's a Tibetan Buddhist chant with a Western classical sensibility. The closing song, "Bliss", is a cosmic meditation from Swedish singer Yogini.

"Yoga" is a perfect blend of East meets West. It's incredibly peaceful; music DOES have the power to quiet the mind. Niraj Chag and Susheela Raman also appear on Putumayo's India. This album also goes well with Putumayo Presents: Asian Lounge and Music From the Tea Lands. This music is sonic nirvana!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart touching, soul stirring March 24, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Sean Johnson has done a fantastic job curating here: he has chosen songs from around the world--so we not only have Indian and American kirtan, but African and European musicians. The obvious more 'famous' (and excellent) choices are here, like Krishna Das and Jai Uttal, but we also have many lesser known Yoga musicians. So there is alot to discover here. I find that this CD is mellow enough to play in its entirety for a Massage session as well as for a Yoga class (I'm a healer and Yoga teacher). And the songs are interesting and unique. And its such a soothing collection. Many songs move me. It is truly healing music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cannot believe how many times I have listened to this! Amazing
This music is both soothing and energizing. Even my 6yo & 7.5yo enjoy it and will protest if I move to switch it thinking they are tired of it.

Great selection, varied and interesting but not so much so as to be jarring. Nice for meditating at the end of a long day.
