Book Description

September 1, 2007 1557788359 978-1557788351
Looking through the eyes of infinity, Yoga Psychology and the Transformation of Consciousness takes us on a journey through the evolution of consciousness that encompasses billions of years of terrestrial history. It does so from an explicitly spiritual perspective, yet one that in no way conflicts with scientific findings. In lucid detail, it makes clear how every thought, every feeling and every breath we take is an expression of a hidden Divine Consciousness. This book helps us to see and understand, from a spiritual perspective, our flaws and limitations as well as our potential for nobility and compassion. In very practical ways, it shows us how we can turn inward, awaken to the Divine presence within, and allow That to infuse and transform us as individuals and a society.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Blending ancient wisdom and up-to-date science, they paint a picture of consciousness that is compelling and inspiring."
—Larry Dossey, MD, editor of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing, and author of The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things

"The authors range widely through contemporary thinking in consciousness studies, philosophy of science and psi research, providing provocative challenges to traditional thinking at every step."
—William A. Adams, Ph.D., psychologist and author of What Does It All Mean? A Humanistic Account of Human Experience

"Yoga in its original and deeper intention has always been a psychology, a way of alleviating suffering from the mind and heart and opening a higher awareness within us. Salmon and Maslow have taken the essence of Yoga psychology and show its relevance today as an important new paradigm for bringing humanity to a higher level of consciousness in which all our personal and social problems, however apparently intractable, can be solved in a lasting manner."
—David Frawley, author Ayurveda and the Mind, and Yoga and Ayurveda

"For the reader who is sincerely interested in knowing about the positive, transformative changes and states of consciousness that are possible to be experienced by right personal endeavor, this book will be extremely helpful."
—From the Foreword by Roy Eugene Davis, direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda and Director of The Center for Spiritual Awareness, Lakemont, GA

"This book tackles in an elegant yet incisive manner one of the necessities of our time -- the synthesis of science and spirituality. Bringing to bear the insights of Indian philosopher-sage Aurobindo Ghose, it helps us understand our experiences from a spiritual perspective. It offers optimism about our world's future which is needed in this time of transformation. Read it."
—Elmer Green, Ph.D., Psychophysicist and Biofeedback Pioneer

"Developing a global consensus about the nature and evolution of consciousness provides a major challenge for 21st Century thought. Nothing could be more important for an understanding of human nature. Drawing largely on the integral yoga philosophy and psychology of Sri Aurobindo, the authors provide an in-depth account that sheds a very different light on the view currently prevalent in the West. Fascinating and provocative."
—Max Velmans, Ph.D., Cognitive Psychologist, author of Understanding Consciousness and science editor of The Blackwell Companion to Consciousness.

"Don Salmon and Jan Maslow liberate us from the limited prison of ego psychology and awaken us to the realm of real consciousness, the true consciousness that lies at the root of all of life. Here is a map to help us escape the confines of our contemporary culture, a way to understand what it really means to be fully alive to our infinite nature. Here are signposts for individual and collective transformation: read them!"
—Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, Sufi teacher and author of Awakening the World: A Global Dimension to Spiritual Life

"What a beautiful and hopeful book Don Salmon and Jan Maslow have given us! In an age of oppression and anxiety they offer us a path of hope and redemption. But don't think this is another book on how to relax and breathe properly under stress, though such books surely have their place. It is rather a deeply intelligent and compassionate exploration of the profound evolutionary possibilities of the human soul and spirit."
—Allan Combs, Ph.D., Psychologist and author of The Radiance of Being

"The human future depends on a spreading awakening to a spiritual reality that Western cultures have been prone to deny. Salmon and Maslow bring together ancient Eastern spiritual teachings with the most advanced of Western science to help us penetrate the illusions of culture, helping us not only to understand the nature of spirituality, but even more, to experience it. A profoundly important book."
—David C. Korten, Ph.D., board chair YES! magazine and author The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community

"As a neuroscientist, a long-time practitioner of Theravada Buddhist meditation, and a budding Christian theologian I find the ideas presented by Salmon & Maslow wonderfully complementary to my own perspective, particularly with respect to the nature of the self. Those interested in how the wisdom of Ancient India can help shed light on the Nature of Consciousness in both traditional Christian and classical Buddhist contexts would be well advised to study this text closely. It is a high quality, authentically serious effort, and very nicely written."
—Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD, Research Psychiatrist UCLA and author of The Mind & The Brain

"Don Salmon and Jan Maslow, in their highly readable and accessible book, lead the reader in a meditative and mind-expanding way ever deeper into the evolutionary awakening of consciousness and the maturation of the human psyche. They demonstrate a deep inner grasp of the Science and Philosophy of Yoga and beautifully bring this vital teaching into our contemporary cultural lives as we face the challenges of the 21st Century. This important book speaks deeply to all emerging global citizens -- to all persons who are on the awakening path and who seek wholeness, wellbeing and inner peace. The narrative dares to recognize and open the lens to the encounter with Infinite Presence, and to seeing through the eyes of Infinity. This book is an accessible manual for rising into this higher life for all humans living in the 21st Century."
—Ashok Gangadean, Professor and Chair of Philosophy (Haverford College), Founder-Director of the Global Dialogue Institute and author of The Awakening of the Global Mind

“The book is excellent – informative, easy to read, well researched and organized, and most of all it has a wonderful spiritual atmosphere. I can feel the breath of Infinity behind every page.”
—Michael Miovic, M.D., attending psychiatrist at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston

What a wonderful journey this book takes you on in its exploration of the nature of our conscious experience from both scientific and spiritual perspectives. Salmon and Maslow draw on the latest findings of scientific research as well as a wide variety of yogic sources, focusing in particular on Sri Aurobindo's multi-dimensional yogic vision. The authors present a fascinating summary of the scientific findings regarding how consciousness emerged over the course of evolution, how it develops in each of us from infancy to adulthood, and how it unfolds in every moment of our lives. They then use those scientific findings to challenge and delve into, in a way I found very eye-opening, the essence of how we experience the world in each moment. While honoring scientific research, they go on to challenge what we mistakenly take to be scientific fact - the view that consciousness is merely an accidental by-product of dead, non-conscious matter.

Particularly eye-opening for me are the deeply intelligent descriptions that bring rich new dimensions to familiar concepts such as karma, rebirth, ego, and soul. The authors also make beautiful sense, in a way I haven't quite seen before, of the purpose of life even in the face of deepest suffering, of our collective purpose and potential even in the face of a world that seems to be falling apart. But this book gives so much more than just wonderful explanations. Through vivid well-chosen examples and through the ongoing recounting of a particular individual's moving life story, it actually evokes the deep and vast dimensions of consciousness that it describes. The CD which comes with the book also does a brilliant job of making the radical and inspiring vision of yoga psychology accessible to our experience. In their own gentle voices, Salmon and Maslow guide us through effective basic meditation practices, and a series of provocative and evocative contmplative exercises. Salmon's sensitively composed and performed music which accompanies the entire CD helps to powerfully create in the listener a deeper experience of oneself and the world.

This book is of particular interest to me because the subject matter is right up my alley--tying together yoga philosophy and depth psychology. And what makes it even more interesting is the yoga philosophy authors Salmon and Maslow use in their treatise--Sri Aurobindo's.

Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) was not only a great mystic and sage, but also India's preeminent twentieth-century philosopher. Aurobindo originated Integral Yoga, which Professor Georg Fuerstein, the world's foremost authority on yoga, describes as "the single most impressive attempt to reformulate Yoga for our modern needs and abilities." "Integral" Yoga gurus such as the late, prominent Swami Satchidananda (who founded Integral Yoga Institute) and "Integral" New Age philosophers such as the renowned Ken Wilber (who created Integral Life) owe their inspiration and orientation to Aurobindo's seminal Integral Yoga philosophy.

Integrating Aurobindo's Yoga philosophy with depth psychology does two things: First, it enables an individual to recontextualize his psychological problems, to view them in a larger evolutionary framework. Just this alone can be liberating. Second, it provides him with a yogic method that enables him to spiritually transcend his problems.

And the yogic method that Aurobindo recommends is essentially the same one that I teach to my students--bringing the Divine Force down into the bodymind, so it can divinize, or en-Light-en, it. Rather than pitting Spirit against matter as other yogas do, Aurobindo's Divine Yoga is about receiving Spirit, Light-energy from above, and allowing it to divinize, or en-Light-en, one's psycho-physical vehicle.

But Aurobindo didn't limit his yoga to just the en-Light-enment of individuals, he also envisaged a world in which Self-realized beings glorify the world by virtue of their creative, enlightened presence and purpose. According to Aurobindo, the ultimate goal of spiritual life isn't realizing the Self; it's transforming the world by manifesting the glory and splendor of the divine Being on the earth plane. And the authors, in alignment with Aurobindo's vision, provide examples of "Spiritual Zones of Evolution," modern small communities that are quasi-prototypes of enlightened culture. So in addition to its in-depth consideration of Aurobindo's yoga philosophy relative to psychology, this far-ranging text also considers it in a societal context.

Although I love and appreciate the authors' integration of Aurobindo's Divine Yoga with depth psychology, I certainly don't agree with everything in this book. Moreover, I wish the authors had mentioned astrology, because from my perspective as an ex-professional astrologer, I do not think it's possible to get a full sense of one's karmic patterns, one's psychical matrix, without an in-depth natal chart consideration. But overall, this book contains so much insightful and enlightening material, I rate it as a marvelous and "must" read for anyone interested in yoga psychology and the transformation of consciousness.
