5.0 out of 5 stars Something Fresh
I have been looking for a new twist in yoga music that fits vinyasa style. I was so happy to find this cd and the class really enjoyed it as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for a yoga class
I really wanted to like this CD, but unfortunately it's not at all appropriate for a yoga class. First, if you do want to use it for a yoga class you will have to move the songs around - the order is not conducive to a typical hatha yoga class structure at all. I loved the idea of "celebrities" singing on a yoga CD but i think that idea was better in theory than in real...

LOVED IT....every track.
knowing that proceeds from the sale of this wonderfull CD benifit yoga health foundation and programs for at-risk youth makes it even more special. where else can you listen to Krishna Das and Sanatam Kaur along side Sarah McLachlan and Peter Gabriel?

I lead a vinyasa style yoga class and purchased this cd to mix up the usual style of music. The compilation of artists is perfect for the class! But it's also a great cd to listen to outside of class- my husband loves it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timeless life, November 26, 2010

"Yoga Revolution" is a surprising compilation from TIME-LIFE. It's is associated with cheap comps of music such as Flower Power Time Life 10 CD set, Time Life Oldies But Goodies 10 CD Set and Time Life Presents: Hard-to-Find Hits, hawked on late night/early morning TV. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Yoga Health Foundation, as well as yoga for at-risk youth. Yoga now has the same stature as after-school basketball and clubs. The young 'uns of Glee: The Music - Journey to Regionals should watch out!

"Yoga Revolution" advertised itself as alternative in the Bay Area alternative culture magazine COMMON GROUND, but it misrepresents, since it has singers like Sting, Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow. Most of the music is meditative mainstream. Too contemplative for a soft rock station, but it has a refreshing blend of African, reggae, and Western sounds.

Krishna Das' opening "Narayana/ For Your Love" is an impressive opening, blending devotional Hindu kirtan with his rocking style. Benin diva Angelique Kidjo and Peter Gabriel have the Afropop "Salala" from her Djin Djin. Sitarist Anoushka Shankar (daughter of Ravi), Asian Underground drummer Karsh Kale and yogi Sting collaborate in "Sea Dreamer" from Breathing Under Water. Wah! blends easy listening, acoustic guitar and Hindu devotion in her song to the elephant-headed god Ganesha. Sarah McLachlan responds with the Prayer of St. Francis. Michael Franti, who was once an alternative rap/hip hop singer, whose songs were once only heard on Pacifica and public radio stations, contributes "I know I'm not alone." Soul singer Seal collaborates with Guru Singh in "I am." Sheryl Crow's "I still believe" sounds like a Christian praise song. Eeday's "Om Namo" combines Hinduism with reggae. Donna De Lory, who was once a backup singer for Madonna, has the peaceful "Bathe in these waters (EarthTones Mix)." Ziggy Marley, son of the famous Bob, sings the reggae "Love is my Religion." Sasha Lazard's "Angeli" is unearthly and mystical. Deva Premal and her partner Miten have a chill-out remix of "Om Tare Tuttare",a Buddhist chant. The album closes with Snatam Kaur's "Long time Sun",which sounds like a meditative Christian hymn.

"Yoga Revolution" is revolutionary in its choice of mainstream pop stars. It brings yoga's meditative music to the mainstream. Yoga is now accessible to those accustomed to a steady diet of Sting, Sheryl Crow, and Michael Franti on pop radio. It brings peaceful music into your life... and in its charitable cause, bringing peacefulness to those less fortunate. Peace.

I really wanted to like this CD, but unfortunately it's not at all appropriate for a yoga class. First, if you do want to use it for a yoga class you will have to move the songs around - the order is not conducive to a typical hatha yoga class structure at all. I loved the idea of "celebrities" singing on a yoga CD but i think that idea was better in theory than in real life. Most of the tracks have a very "pop" feel to them, again not conducive to a hatha class. Finally, I teach in a gym and my students are from various religious backgrounds. So, I felt very uncomfortable when Seal came on chanting that "there is one God and that's a fact." Not sure how that's considered "yoga" music. I knew the Prayer of St. Francis was on this CD, and that by itself does not bother me so much, but when two songs later my speakers are blasting about one God, I have to wonder if my students thought I had some secret Catholic agenda. I'm giving it two stars only because there was one song on the CD that I did like and will use, but as a whole this CD is pretty useless to me, unfortunately.

4.0 out of 5 stars good yoga cd but not appropriate for yoga classes, June 19, 2011

I really like this yoga cd - nice change to some of the other yoga cds. It is great to listen to in the car or for a fast vinyasa flow class - however, it isn't appropriate for most hatha yoga classes. I still think is a great cd though.

This CD offers quite a variety of music which I enjoy. For some reason it stays in my CD player in my car and it is currently my music selection on my drive to work. I am happy I purchased it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mantras with a twist, October 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Yoga Revolution (Audio CD)
This album is truly a revolution in yoga music! No longer are mantras the domain of the yoga class or just for quiet contemplation. This album funks them up (without losing their beautiful essence) and will certainly appeal to a broad audience. Fantastic music when hosting a dinner party, or to sing to when driving around. It will certainly lift your spirits. I can't wait to put a vinyasa flow to these tunes!!!
