Based on the Ashtanga practice, Yoga with Richard Freeman demonstrates successive and continuously flowing poses in the traditional method. Freeman instructs this two-hour video with great emphasis on the sequential arrangement of each posture. Movement, body alignment, and deep full breathing become the focus throughout each series. These elements (breathing, movement, and alignment) aid in pulling from the core energy. Freeman explains that the breath not only generates liveliness, but it acts as the link between mind and body. The constant movement within this program creates an extensive challenge for the major muscles of the upper and lower body and will make even the most conditioned yoga practitioner break a sweat. These poses are difficult and require substantial flexibility and strength, however alternative postures are offered for exercisers in need of modifications or introductory level exercise. Seasoned practitioners will find a great workout here, while beginners may find this method somewhat unapproachable at first. As with any exercise program, stamina and flexibility will increase as the frequency of training becomes greater. Listening closely to Freeman's enlightening tips on the distinct practice of Ashtanga will only heighten the overall experience. Authentic yoga terminology is used here, which makes this workout informative and effective. Yoga with Richard Freeman is a fantastic format that will continue to test the agility and strength of all yoga participants. All exercisers will want to have a mat before starting. --Olivia Voigts

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets, August 10, 2000

This review is from: Yoga With Richard Freeman: Ashtanga Yoga: The Primary Series [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a great Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga video. It can be used to practice with or in watch and learn mode.Richard gives good instruction to the poses and a good introduction to the basics like Ujayi breath and Drishti (gaze). The flow from posture to posture (Vinyasa) is also breathtaking (especially appreciated by those who have stumbled through it themselves).Richard Freeman is an excellent practitioner and teacher, and while no video can substitute for a good teacher, this is still as good as it gets for Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.It might prove daunting for beginners and the uninitiated. The best use of this video would be to reinforce what you learned from your workshops or your regular teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant teacher who really knows the essence of Yoga, July 22, 2001

This review is from: Yoga With Richard Freeman: Ashtanga Yoga: The Primary Series [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I'd like to recommend this video to everyone who's interested in real Yoga -- not simply some cool postrues for self-entertainment. Richard is elegant in teaching and every minute in this video is worthwhile -- no show-offs and gimmicks. He adopts simple background and gives clear explanation, and the simplicity amounts a kind of elegance that makes other yoga videos that I have appear to be a little bit too commercialized. Just by listening to his explanation and watching him doing the postures, I gained a deeper understanding of Ashtanga. I learned the essence of breathing from the first 15 minutes of his video which I had tried but failed to get for many years. For short, Richard teaches REAL Ashtanga in this video in a effecient and elegant way.

5.0 out of 5 stars The true heart of yoga!!!, March 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga With Richard Freeman: Ashtanga Yoga: The Primary Series [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you really want to learn yoga from a master who can teach you the essence of yoga, there is no better video out there--except for Freeman's other two videos. Simply said, Freeman is by far the most profound and knowledgeable teacher of yoga in the world today. His instruction is clear and concise, and his demonstration of the poses is nothing short of inspirational. Freeman isn't some glamorous model who used to do aerobics and now does yoga--he's the real thing, a true yogi, which is very rare. He also happens to be extremely graceful, kind and funny. This video is recommended for experienced practitioners, or for beginners who have the patience to work their way through the ashtanga series slowly and wisely--as it's intended to be learned. And for anyone of any skill level who wants to see real yoga demonstrated by a master--this will blow your mind!!
