Book Description

Yoga and Scoliosis: A Journey to Health and Healing is a deeply soothing form of moving meditation and a physical activity and is a safe way to rebuild strength, stamina, and flexibility and to address the spinal curvature of scoliosis without surgery. The book presents an evidence-based look at how this approach works. Dr. Fishman has been treating individuals with scoliosis with yoga for many years and has collected x-rays of his work, before and after, demonstrating actual lessening of the degree of curvature from the practice of Iyengar yoga.

Yoga and Scoliosis: A Journey to Health and Healingis a source of encouragement, knowledge, and healing for those who have scoliosis and need to treat it, but want to avoid braces and/or surgery. It briefly covers the history and treatment modalities of scoliosis and discusses the development of the spine in the embryo. Yoga and Scoliosis explores the complexities of the concept of alignment in the body, with the main part of the book showing how to address scoliosis utilizing Iyengar yoga. Four chapters give instruction in yoga asanas for scoliosis, and another chapter discusses yoga practice in daily living. Finally there is a Foreword by B. K. S. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga.

;Part I Introduction: 1. Introduction to Scoliosis by Dr. Loren Fishman, 2. Yoga, 3. Concepts of Sequencing, Part II Yoga for Scoliosis 4. Postures on the Floor, 5. Standing Asanas, 6. 4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, but not for the Layperson November 15, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This seems to be a very well-researched and informative book. There are numerous photos and thorough descriptions which detail how to modify yoga poses for people with scoliosis. However, it's impossible for me to judge how good it is because it's not something that I-- a solo practitioner and a layperson-- can use. There's an EXTENSIVE list of props recommended for these modifications and not just basic blocks and straps, but also stools, chairs, ropes, pulleys, bolsters, balls, etc. In the photos for several of the poses, there's also a rack of some sort to which the straps have been attached. It further gives the feel that this requires a professional set-up to follow. Each pose requires so many props and has so many directions that it isn't possible to do on one's own; just the multi-sentence directions for each pose alone requires someone to at least read to you all the things you should be doing and paying attention to. I did find some of the appendix items useful, such as the modifications you can do for sitting more comfortably at a computer. The introduction was very enticing, with its tales of people's curvatures improving dramatically through a dedicated yoga practice, especially one such as this targeted for the peculiarities of scoliosis. I have no doubt what the author says is true as I've seen my own scoliosis improve through yoga. Overall though, I was disappointed to see that this book is more of a reference guide for yoga teachers and/or physical therapists and not for the scoliosis patients themselves. If I had access to such a person and they used this book, I'm sure I would feel in very good hands indeed.

YOGA AND SCOLIOSIS: A JOURNEY TO HEALTH AND HEALING by Marcia Monroe

This is an important book, because it archives poses in the Iyengar tradition for people who have scoliosis and who, because of their condition, might not otherwise be able to reap the benefits of a yoga practice. Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar's method provides an avenue for people with scoliosis to experience yoga postures that might otherwise be impossible for them to do. Over time, and with guidance, practicing yoga has distinct advantages over other treatments for scoliosis. With the help of specific props, designed for use with this particular condition, the poses urge spinal convexities and concavities to adjust, the back muscles to strengthen, and the body's focus to move toward midline.

Scoliosis is an asymmetrical spinal condition that becomes increasingly painful, and may restrict breathing, as a person ages.

The problem with this book is: who is it written for? The instruction waffles between telling the reader he/she can follow the instructons and self administer the poses; to telling the reader they must do these poses under the watchful eyes of a senior teacher; to speaking to the reader as if he/she is a senior yoga teacher. Confusing point-of-view.

In addition, Marcia Monroe is the only subject in the book. All photos and instruction refer to her particular scoliosis. I imagine a senior teacher could interpret and adapt the instruction and props. The author does not take the step to reach out and explain how others, with different scoliosis patterns, might adapt prop usage. She does give good general instruction; for example, how to use the eyes and prevent the eyes from wandering while practicing yoga.

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not... May 9, 2012

If you're an Iyengar teacher and have a load of props, this book will be good. It's daunting for the layperson, though. Requires physioballs and special benches and wall ropes and assumes you have the knowledge to position them all correctly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well prepared and illustrated material. November 26, 2012
By Mara
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I chose this particular book after extensive review and the purchase of other books that covered non-surgical aide
for the correction of Scoliosis. YOGA and SCOLIOSIS: A Journey . . . is the best, most modern and comprehensive book
for both trained health providers and individuals or parents who are effected by the 'disorder' of Scoliosis. This book is written and illustrated with such a common sense approach that very young children with Scoliosis can understand and follow what they need to do to accomplish a reversal of their 'disorder'. This book, in my opinion, is based on the "Schroth" Treatment for Scoliosis - in a more up-to-date explanation and visuals fashion! OUTSTANDING

2.0 out of 5 stars Poles, belts, blocks, pads, ropes, chairs, stools, etc. December 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a problematic book. As other reviewers have observed, it seems intended more for professional yoga teachers than for home practitioners. If you open the book to any page, you'll see that the poses involve a daunting array of props and complex instructions. There is no sequence (beginner to advanced, short session to longer session, etc.), as the poses are just sectioned into chapters such as floor poses, standing poses, and so on.
Where to start? To attempt these poses without knowledgeable instruction would seem foolish and possibly even harmful, even for someone who already had a home yoga practice.

There is another problem, and it has to do with the celebrity (at least in the yoga world) introductions by B.K.S. Iyengar and, in particular, by Dr. Loren Fishman. Fishman has himself written several well-received books on therapeutic yoga. These books are notable for their clear instructions and minimal use of props. Anyone can benefit from them (although it helps to have some understanding of yoga). So it is ironic that his introduction to Marcia Monroe's book states: [Yoga] can be done by oneself, every day, without elaborate equipment, even when traveling." Turn to any page in "Yoga and Scoliosis," with its elaborate equipment, and you'll see that it ain't so, at least not in this program. To my mind, Fishman's endorsement of the book, prominently displayed on the cover, is a kind of false advertising.

Finally, the production values of this book are terrible, unless you enjoy page after page of murky black and white photography. Should you persevere with this yoga program, squinting at those photographs while figuring out what to do might send land you in the optometrist's office.

If you're a yoga teacher with clients who have scoliosis, there undoubtedly is useful information in this book. For everybody else---forget about it.
