earthrise soundsystem delivers a stellar soundtrack for yoga...and beyond. in fact, they illustrate the undeniable truth that we're "doing" yoga everywhere, all the time. the beats satisfy, the gorgeous vocals linger and the mood changes the listener permanently. when a record does that, well, everyone's certainly got their own interpretation of what that means, but it's...

I bought this album because I heard one of its songs on NPR's show "Echoes" and liked it. Thinking the whole album would have similar songs, I listened to the snippets that are available on the Amazon site. The snippets are all of instrumental parts of the songs and the grooves sounded alright. I took a chance; and boy, was that the wrong way to go about deciding on...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing record, January 5, 2010

This is an extraordinary album. It is so funky and has the most haunting melodies and singers. What makes it so great is that the tracks feel like songs and not just formless loops. The arrangements are incredible. I highly recommend this record for doing anything, not just yoga.

I found myself moving and designing a new YOGA class immediately - the music spoke to me helping to create something very different from what I usually do. Love it, using it over and over in class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collection of Praise for, The Yoga Sessions: EarthRise SoundSystem, January 1, 2010

Most impressed by this record, and already a fan of their remix work. I'm not an official reviewer guy, so to express my excitement about this album I copied these respected quotes from their website: [...]

_________

"Completely flawless album of chilled, beautiful and well-crafted tracks. You can really hear the people and music of the world rise out of the earth!"

-Andrew T. Mackay [Bombay Dub Orchestra]

"EarthRise Soundsystem is raising the vibration of the earth." -MC Yogi

"A deep, moving and organic sonic adventure for the mind, body and soul." -DJ Pathaan [BBC/Worldwide]

"Don't let the title fool you - though it may indeed be the perfect soundtrack to your yoga practice (I wouldn't pretend to know), this beautifully produced music transcends any such usage. EarthRise Soundsystem beautifully integrate chilled, dubbed out textures and global sensibilities without a trace of any of the saccharine, new age pitfalls that dominate much of the genre. One of the nicest debuts I've heard in quite some time."

-Bob Duskis [Co-Founder, Six Degrees Records]

"Having contributed many remixes for other artists, Earthrise SoundSystem steps out with a first set of original material that confirms them as the major players we always suspected them to be."

-Derek Rath [NPR's All Things Considered/KPFK's Global Village]

"Musical omnivores Derek Beres and Duke Mushroom live up to their EarthRise name in their debut collection filled with deeply rooted grooves that reach for transcendence, mixing gorgeous internationalist melodies and contemporary downtempo beats. They succeed beautifully, supported by a cast of first-rate vocalists and instrumentalists."

-Bill Bragin [Director, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts]

"A beautiful piece that weaves rich percussive and harmonic elements from around the world, while maintaining a low end theory and crispness of NY boom bap." -DJ Center

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga Music: Eclectic Mix of Cultures, September 10, 2011

With a resequencing of the tracks, this album is suitable for a class-length soft power vinyasa home practice (with a bell curve and/or dramatic arc in tempo). The ethereal, haunting and otherworldly melodies get you to move dancelike through your sequence.

Especially appreciate that some lyrics are in Hebrew, others in Sanskrit; with the accompaniment of lounge jazz/tabla percussions. Certainly an exciting, cross-cultural journey for your ears to accompany your journey on your mat.

We used this CD for our group's yoga practice today and all members seemed to like it very much. Really nice melodies and 'haunting' music - just apt for halloween times! Give it a try.

The snippets are all of instrumental parts of the songs and the grooves sounded alright. I took a chance; and boy, was that the wrong way to go about deciding on weather to buy a CD. Yes, there are a few good songs on this CD, but the bad ones are so bad they make the whole thing smell like something my cat just deposited in the litter box. The good songs happen to be foreign ones with a nice easy listening eastern groove them. The bad ones are sung in English and sound like the worse kind of pop imaginable; just wretched. I could never do yoga to them; I'd be too busy looking for a machine gun in order to shoot something... it's that kind of bad.
