Gr 6 Up-Following the successful format of her Children's Book of Yoga (Clear Light, 1998), Luby once again presents a visual feast of eye-catching, whimsical photographs accompanied by an information-packed text. Each posture is illustrated by a photograph of the animal, insect, or object (fish, butterfly, triangle) for which it is named. On the facing page, teens dressed in outfits that match the colors of the fish, butterfly, etc., demonstrate the posture, which is described in detail in the accompanying text. Many of the photos show how the postures can be done with partners or in groups. The introduction discusses the many benefits of doing yoga during the teen years and includes an explanation of the chakras, the seven energy points on the body that are stimulated by particular postures. For those who want even more details, the back matter provides sample workouts and lists of postures that alleviate physical, mental, and emotional difficulties, such as headaches, sadness, or nervous tension. The book includes both basic and more advanced poses, making it appropriate for beginner and intermediate levels, although students of yoga may be surprised to see that the author has invented some new poses of her own. Whatever their fitness level, teens who want to enjoy the benefits of yoga will be inspired by this appealing book. For a less detailed overview that explores the spiritual side of yoga, teens can turn to Stefanie Iris Weiss's Everything You Need to Know about Yoga: An Introduction for Teens (Rosen, 1999).-Dawn Amsberry, formerly at Oakland Public Library, CA

More appropriate for younger children,
By Inner Smile (Washington DC) - See all my reviews

As a yoga teacher and a mother of teens I am seeking books that present the beauty and value of yoga to teens. This book is nice to look at however...if you are seeking a yoga program that teaches classic yoga postures this is not the book for you. They are only briefly mentioned late in the book. My kids and the teens that I teach do not want postures with "kid names", they are interested in and are capable of learning the true names of postures and the metaphors that they present. Alignment in postures is not presented well and while I do not overly focus on strict alignment with teens I feel that it should be presented in a book on the subject. In my mind this is a "fun" type book but not for serious students or teachers.

Great Book,
By Melissa (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yoga for Teens (Hardcover)
This book was so great. I'm a follower of the raw food diet and have practiced yoga for 2 years now. I'm only 16 but after I did some the exercises in this book I saw results after 6 weeks of doing them. I'm a surfer so being in shape is a must. This book worked for me. I also haven't had sickness in a year. I would recommend this book to anyone.
