Book Description

November 1999
More and more people are seeking vacations that are relaxing rather than chaotic, that help them renew their sense of health rather than keep them running frantically from sight to sight. Yoga Vacations highlights over 100 different vacation centers and retreats for both the beginner and advanced yoga practitioner. It includes detailed, thoughtfully written entries providing information on teachers' styles and philosophies, recommended levels of experience, and activities and services, as well as the basics on accommodations, meals, and fees. The author, a 15-year yoga instructor, makes a distinction between yoga vacations and retreats to help readers customize their perfect getaway. Some destinations are strictly retreats - places for quiet, in-depth yoga study - while the vacation settings listed allow free time for nearby shopping and sightseeing.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Reminiscent of recent travel books that feature "change-your-life" vacations, this book specifically targets yoga retreats across the world. Cunningham, who has been offering yoga vacations for many years, has selected what she considers the best international yoga vacations, as well as retreats that offer accommodations and meals. The entries are arranged geographically by country and state; and each entry includes several pages of informationAlike when the retreat or vacation is offered (some are only a specific week each year) and what style of yoga is followed. Very detailed information is provided on student criteria, disability access, number of participants possible, accommodations, meals, fees, and daily schedules. The descriptions are well written and somewhat interesting, but this book is only going to find a limited audience among people looking for this kind of vacation. Buy for larger public libraries where yoga books and "change-your-life" travel books are popular.AAlison Hopkins, Queens Borough P.L., Briarwood, NY

This review is from: Yoga Vacations: A Guide to International Yoga Retreats (Paperback)
As a beginning yoga student I've been searching for a way to improve my skills and have a great vacation too and this book pointed me in so many great directions-I don't know where to go first! I really love the guest comment section because you get such a great feel for what's unique or special about the retreat. A great book for yoga students of every ability. See you in Peru!

2.0 out of 5 stars Wish I didn't spend the money for this one, November 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Yoga Vacations: A Guide to International Yoga Retreats (Paperback)
I hate to speak poorly of ANYTHING yoga, but this book was disappointing. Most of the vacations are expensive and are limited in number of times offered per year and length of instruction. I've seen most of these listed somewhere in a copy of Yoga Journal magazine. Flip thru one of those before buying this book. It may be better to talk to someone who's done the vacation package before spending the money. Namaste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just reading it makes you feel better!, March 1, 2001

This review is from: Yoga Vacations: A Guide to International Yoga Retreats (Paperback)
This book is a very well-organized and well-thought-out guide to the wide spectrum of yoga retreats and workshops available, both in the U.S. and internationally. The introduction includes brief but clear descriptions of the various styles of yoga offered by these centers, enabling you to choose a program that best suits your training and preferences. Each center is profiled in enough depth to give you a sense of its atmosphere as well as the physical particulars (schedule, facilities, meals, etc.) -- some people are looking for a retreat-type environment, while others prefer yoga classes in a livelier resort setting, and this book helps you to avoid making an expensive mistake. The photos are tantalizing, and both the teachers' philosophies and past participants' reactions to each program are described. I hope the author updates the book frequently -- this type of information goes out of date quickly -- but, in my experience, it seemed very accurate (my teacher is active in the Iyengar Yoga community, so I'd already heard about some of these programs). Reading the book is like getting a head start on a yoga vacation, and your only problem will be choosing which of the many wonderful possibilities to sign up for!
