Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Khalsa, an accomplished yoga practitioner and teacher, instructs the novice in dozens of basic yoga positions (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayamas) and meditations from her own "harmonious blend of Hatha and Kundalini Yoga." Although there are over 200 postures in Hatha practice, Khalsa focuses on those benefiting women's concerns, among them menstruation, breast care, pregnancy, birth and menopause. Step-by-step instructions accompanied by color photographs allow even confirmed klutzes to manage sun salutations, Downward Dog, Crow and the Wheel. Readers are also tempted with recipes for drinks such as Golden Milk, made with the Indian spice turmeric, and beauty treatments such as the Papaya Face Mask or a yogurt bath. For those who need more encouragement to stretch their limbs, Khalsa includes testimonials by women who cite the life-changing powers of yoga. After browsing through the pages of Khalsa's accessible book, even the most yoga-phobic may be inspired to take a "position."

Her warm, playful tone invites the reader to have fun while trying the recommended yogic practices and breath techniques. Jane Tuma

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga for Women, October 31, 2002

This review is from: Yoga for Women (Yoga for Living) (Hardcover)
When I saw "Yoga for Women" for sale, I had to buy it immediately! This is the second book I've bought by Shakta Kaur Khalsa (the first was Kundalini Yoga -- also fantastic!).

I knew it would be high quality not only because it is published by DK (well-known for its beautiful photography, layout, and design) but because it is written by such a gifted writer!

Shakta has such a beautiful, lyrical, poetic way of expressing her deep well of knowledge about yoga.

This book is so rich in wonderful healing, energizing, and nurturing activities. It is incredibly beautiful and inspiring. I literally felt better just reading it, even before I did any of the very accessible and effective "kriyas" (exercises).

There's also a great section on yoga for relationships!

This book would make a perfect gift for anyone who is interested in learning about yoga in a clear, uplifting, meaningful way.

Thank you, Shakta, for blessing us with the beauty of your soul!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book., June 9, 2003

i bought this book a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with it. Not only the poses and discussion about yoga itself, but the many meditations (something i am horrible at, and really need in my life) and the recipes-they all sound fabulous, i don't know which to try first.

i enjoy the personal stories included in the book-they remind me that even imperfect people like me can do better with yoga and caring for oneself. There is only one pose that i can't seem to get from the description, but overall, she is fabulous at explaining each pose or meditation.

Aside from the information, the book is well written, with a personal, caring voice and is just beautiful. Personally, i recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars User Friendly and Personal, October 30, 2002

I love this women's yoga book. I truly enjoyed the combination of hatha yoga and kundalini yoga, the recipes and the meditations. I especially like the conversational and "personal touch" which makes this book both informative and "intimate". It's like practicing with a group of friends who are sharing instead of just lecturing.
