From the Publisher

The Yoga of Indra Devi is gently, straight-forward and effective. As she teaches it, Yoga is a unique method for a harmonic and integral development of one's physical, mental, and spiritual sides, allowing for the employment of a healthy and happy life. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Author

When a Yoga student fixes and properly directs his or her course, a molecular change takes place in his or her body until, by the end of around six months, this change starts to influence his or her tastes and habits. As the strength within awakens, the state of conscience in each individual also changes; a person stops feeling lonely, all fears disappear and happiness is suddenly within reach. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

"Yoga is a method, a system of physical, mental and spiritual development." ~Indra Devi

Indra Devi's book about yoga helped me to understand yoga in a deeper way than I could ever understand this practice through exercise videos. I truly feel that I knew very little about yoga before reading this book, even though I've practiced yoga for many years.

Indra Devi introduced me to Bhakti Yoga: achieving union with God through devotion and selfless love so you can become a channel of God's grace. I'm sure you could incorporate various principles into your life without having to leave society altogether. In fact, I think yoga helps you to live more peacefully with other people.

I also enjoy Jnana Yoga - Knowledge and study. Who knew that there were 10 Rules for a Yoga Code of Morality or that there were so many branches of yoga.

I also learned that Dharana is mind control and that Samadhi is the ultimate state of bliss. Asana or "postures" are just the beginning. While most workout videos do not introduce you to a spiritual dimension of yoga, I found that Indra Devi's way of exploring this aspect of yoga is not at all threatening to anyone practicing any religion. You don't have to change your religion to increase your flexibility, develop clear thinking or live a more healthy life.

What I'm finding lately is that to live a more fulfilling life, you almost have to look at various cultures and traditions and start to incorporate beautiful knowledge into your life. Life is a huge smorgasbord of experience and I hate to limit myself to living in one little box. I want to find out what secrets are hiding in many beautiful presents.

Yoga is one of those presents.

First published in 1948, I found a worn copy of this book in a Lousiana thrift store when I was 12. I have practiced what Indra preached in that first little book, my entire life... so far. I'm entering my 7th decade now and I am grateful to have found such a powerful teacher.

Mataji Indra Devi & her pupil & colleague, Helene Vreeland were my yoga teachers in the early 70s & friends & sister devotees of Sai Baba for many years thereafter. I only recently learned that Indra Devi was the direct disciple of Master Yogi Krishnamacharya who first brought the teachings & philosophy of yoga out of the obscurity of ancient archives & into the modern world. Thus Indra Devi is listed as one of 4 "root Gurus" of modern yoga & the "First lady of yoga" in the western world & to her many famous pupils in Hollywood. This book offers her instructions in such a simple, clear, easy to read & follow manner--that I could still hear her loving, merry voice ringing in my mind. This book offers a very safe easy entry for someone of any age or health condition who is new to yoga--as well as refreshing reminders for more advanced practitioners. In taking up yoga again after a lapse of many years, I found it extremely helpful. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in cultivating a more conscious, healthy, happy & stress free lifestyle. "SaiVahni" Ashtar-Athena Sheran

This book was written by one of the great persons of the last century who was one of the first persons to widely introduce yoga to the West. She lived to the age of 102. This book also contains a few photos of Indra Devi's early life and a photo during the Russian revolution. The book offers very valuable advice for those interested in yoga as well as a step by step program for the beginner. It's a very worthwhile book.
