This is the only book I need to practice yoga. It has
all the details about
how I should go about personalizing my yoga practice
and all the alignment,
modifications, cautions and more for each posture.
And that covers only 2 of
the chapters. It also gives me an understanding of
Ayurveda, how to know
what type I am and then how to adapt my yoga practice
so that it has the
strongest balancing effect for my specific needs. The
chapter that gives me
months of practices especially designed for my type of
energy is really
valuable. Both authors are masters in their own
fields. Sandra Kozak has
long been known (and on several continents) as an
exceptional yoga teacher
and Dr. Frawley has written many books on Ayurveda.
All in all this is one
of the best books on yoga postures in print and is a
must for any
practitioner of yoga.

Yoga for Your Type is an excellent book for everybody whether they practice Yoga or Ayurvedic or just want to be healthy. In the first chapter the authors give a brief but thorough basis for the understanding of yoga and of Ayurveda. Ms Kozak, who is well known for her exceptional teaching and wealth of yoga information, not only gives complete directions for practicing each of the yoga postures but, in the second chapter gives valuable information about how to practice. Both the third and fourth chapter make this a lasting manual for our practices by giving us 6-12 months of practice directions for the three doshic types.

This is an extraordinary book for everybody who practice Yoga or have an ayurvedic way of life. Or both. The principle of this book is to integrate the ancient wisdow that, in some level, unifies Yoga and Ayurveda, the "Sciende of Life". In fact, one almost can't live without another and I wonder why this subject took so much time to be developed.
If you are familiar with ayurveda, you know that there are some exercises, some foods and some health directions that are better or not so better for your type (your dosha). Following this reasoning, according to Mr. Frawley, certain asanas, ways to breathe and other cares of Yoga practice can do better or worse for you, based on the type of person you are. His explanations are clear and objective, the book has lots of beautiful and useful illustrations/pictures, and the harmony you'll get by integrating that wisdom in your practice is incommensurable.
More than that, I believe your practice of Yoga can't be that good without this ayurvedic approach. In fact, I don't know why we in the West don't have the ayurvedic approach attached naturally to the Yoga knowledge, as it should be.
If you don't know Yoga nor Ayurveda, I suggest you the books about Ayurveda from Mr. David Frawley and the books of the Yoga from Georg Feuerstein or any other author somebody closer to you - who lives Yoga - had suggested you. But, the best suggestion at all, I believe, is don't die without knowing what Yoga and Ayurveda can do for and with you.
All the best!

At age 54 I recently began doing yoga for the first time in my life. I have always exercised, but yoga is completely different for me. I purchased a few DVD's which did not really explain in great detail important details for a beginning student, nor show how to adapt the poses for a beginner's body (especially a middle aged person.) I found this book through my local library, and after reading it, came to Amazon and bought it. I love this book because 1) it explains ayurvedic principles clearly with great insight, 2)it shows the various poses in great detail, and 3) best of all, it explains how exactly to protect your body from injury by modifying the various poses a beginner may not be able to do. I have been frustrated in yoga class and with DVD's when some of the poses done by the instructors hurt and I don't know the way to modify them so they don't. This book takes care of that! It is an invaluable resource for those who truly want a better understanding and want to keep doing yoga without injuring themselves in the process.

Charts are totally unreadable on the large kindle fire and cannot be copied or printed. Pictures are okay. Buy this in paper.

First, I highly recommend the companion volume "Yoga & Ayurveda". I bought both books together and got far more benefit from "Yoga & Ayurveda". I wish I had saved my money and not bought "Yoga for Your Type".

Decent things about "Yoga for Your Type":
1. The programmes for instant dosha balance (for example instant vata reducing etc.) are inspiring - even if impossible for normal people
2, Decent intro to basic ayurvedic concepts for beginners or yoga students who know nothing about ayurveda

Flaws & Shortcomings:
1. The illustrations are all advanced yogis with perfect bodies achieving perfection. I loved Bikram's book for showing asanas done by REAL people. Fat people, skinny people, old people, young people, etc. Although "Yoga for Your Type" illustrates "modifications" for beginners, even the modifications are done by yogis with perfect bodies. Practicing at home in a mirror I have no idea how the asana will look on "me".
All this perfection is daunting. The average yogi will never look as good as the pictures in this book and you may hurt yourself trying.

2. Too advanced for realistic at-home practice. This book might be a good guide for professional yoga teachers, but even amongst the "level 1" programmes were many poses I will never achieve even if I practice for the next 50 years. And I am an intermediate yogi - not a beginner!

3. "Yoga for Your Type" ignores its own premise. For example I would like to see an old skinny person with stiff joints doing the vata programme. Why not show a fat person doing the kapha programme? The models and pictures are beautiful but have little to offer "real" people with all our imperfections.
Again, I will recommend Bikram's book just for the inspiration of showing normal imperfect people doing asana. Yoga is for everyone, not just perfect bodies and ex-gymnasts.

4. A better title would be: Dosha Programmes for Advanced Yogis and Yoga Teachers". For extremely athletic and advanced yogis and professional yoga teachers this book will give some good idea for class preparation. For at-home practice by beginners, intermediates, or people struggling with health concerns this book is more like a coffee table book of pretty pictures.

This is a great companion for serious yoga practitioners. Instructions are given for how to assess your body type as well as clear description of the background of yoga asana and how it ties into Ayurveda. I have yet to find another book that specifically shows how the doshas are effected by each posture and what you can do to balance it out until I picked up this book. The narrative is potent. It explains the Ayurveda effects of asana practice and is great for beginners and advanced alike since it guides you through how to get started as well as how to deepen the practice for the regular practitioner. The photographs are especially helpful. Each asana series is categorized in its own section such as standing, inversions, backbends, floor, or twists. The pages of each asana are labeled with the Sanskrit name followed by the English translation. From there, information based on time, breath, focus and movement shows you the different effects on vata, pitta and kapha dosha so that you can personalize the posture to be the most beneficial to you. The narrative explains how to come into the pose, hold it and come out with description of modifications and action notes. Towards the end of the book are programs written for long or short practices which are customizable according to your personal constitution. Yoga for Your Body Type is easy to refer back to. Dr. David Frawley is extremely well versed in both subjects and it comes across loud and clear in his books. This is a must have for giving guidance on how to keep your dosha in check through asana.

Yoga For Your Type is a great book on Yoga. It teaches about Ayurveda and how we can know ourselves better and how we can then use our postures to help us manage our energy, feelings, and lives. It is also a really good book about yoga. The descriptions of the poses are thorough and understandable and as good as you can find anywhere. I use this

book and recommend it as both a good and complete yoga book as well as a good reference for anyone wanting to create a better Ayurvedic balancing type of yoga practice.
