A 'must have' book for all seekers.
The author conveys her own personal journey which led her to experience the transformative power of the Dark Goddess Kali Ma.
Normally this wouldn't be a problem - plenty of authors do this beautifully.

Yogic Secrets of the Dark Goddess could be a great book from a devotional standpoint. There is certainly a strong bhakti (devotional) element to the text, and Chopra's enthusiasm is genuine. However, there are a number of problems I have with this book.

Let's start with the positives. Chopra effortlessly jumps straight into the expansive concepts of the Divine Mother in bite-size pieces. This is quite admirable, as few books really have tackled the deeper dimensions of Kali and the yogic and/or Tantric approach to the Divine Mother.

Each chapter is only two or three pages, making this a book that is fairly easy to read in small chunks, to provide a kick-start to daily meditation, etc. This bite-size approach allows Chopra to explore a vast array of manifestations of Kali - though be clear, she isn't speaking about specific goddesses, but rather conceptual manifestations that relate to various aspects of her own approach to the experience of deity, such as the creative process, colors, flowers, and various aspects of human existence. She does briefly talk about the basic symbolism of Kali midway through the book, but it's quite limited in scope.

So if you have read about Kali and are looking for something that takes a different approach, this book does frequently have jewels of wisdom that those of us who have done deep practice will recognize as being authentic, and those who haven't yet gotten to that place can use as signposts towards authentic experience. There are beautiful expositions diving into some of the more mysterious aspects of Kali as she takes form in human experience and awareness.

That being said, there are a few negatives that I just couldn't get past.

First, Chopra's translation of many Sanskrit terms is often incorrect.

This book helps us understand the compassion of Kali. It is filled with great devotion and love.
Shambhavi shows us how to recognize the beauty and magic of the Dark Goddess who awaits us when we sincerely open our hearts.
Kali is the Divine Mother Herself. This book helps us connect to the caring and generous nature of Kali. When one is ready to face one's own fears, desires and shadows, Kali will help us cross over to the Light.
A 'must have' book for all seekers.

What has been deemed one of the most useful reviews on here critiques the authority of Shambhavi's writings on two accounts: The first of these is essentially that she uses the word "I". I am not sure what the reviewer expects. He says it's fine for it to be a personal account yet she's definitely mired in ego if she speaks of her experiences.... Hm... The answer to "Who am I?" is "So Hum." or I Am... There is ego death and then there is personality death. These are two different things. The reviewer then proceeds to discuss the translations of the sanskrit... Listen... these mantras are Ancient. They are powerful. Reading the opening mantra sequence in the preface of this book brought so much of Kali's love into my being that I was just sitting on the couch in deep trance, transcending my earthly body. Even just opening the book (my copy was incidentally signed by Shambhavi) brought the goddess into my being.

Ah, and here it is, with me again as I write.

As one guru said of our proclivity to seek verification of the legitimacy/authenticity of InFormation: "You seek too much information... not enough transformation." And this book provides exactly that: the opportunity for the seeker to engage in that transformation of lower self to higher self. Shambhavi emphasises in moments that tapasya and bhakti is in so many ways an art. Its power does not arise merely from strict adherence to a daily practice arising from the yogi/yogini's own inner self discipline. No. The devotion to the Feminine creative/destructive forces which gift all existence meaning through love cannot be reached by the mind/method alone. It must be come to by the heart of true devotion and surrender. Kali won't give it to us for free.
