Yogic Secrets of the Dark Goddess could be a great book from a devotional standpoint. There is certainly a strong bhakti (devotional) element to the text, and Chopra's enthusiasm is genuine. However, there are a number of problems I have with this book.

Let's start with the positives. Chopra effortlessly jumps straight into the expansive concepts of the Divine Mother in bite-size pieces. This is quite admirable, as few books really have tackled the deeper dimensions of Kali and the yogic and/or Tantric approach to the Divine Mother.

Each chapter is only two or three pages, making this a book that is fairly easy to read in small chunks, to provide a kick-start to daily meditation, etc. This bite-size approach allows Chopra to explore a vast array of manifestations of Kali - though be clear, she isn't speaking about specific goddesses, but rather conceptual manifestations that relate to various aspects of her own approach to the experience of deity, such as the creative process, colors, flowers, and various aspects of human existence. She does briefly talk about the basic symbolism of Kali midway through the book, but it's quite limited in scope.

So if you have read about Kali and are looking for something that takes a different approach, this book does frequently have jewels of wisdom that those of us who have done deep practice will recognize as being authentic, and those who haven't yet gotten to that place can use as signposts towards authentic experience. There are beautiful expositions diving into some of the more mysterious aspects of Kali as she takes form in human experience and awareness.

That being said, there are a few negatives that I just couldn't get past.

First, Chopra's translation of many Sanskrit terms is often incorrect.

In this day of poorly written and unispired texts, it is a breath of fresh air to read Shambhavi chopra's "yogic secrets." This text shows that the Yoga tradition is alive and well and reveals the ways the Goddess can heal and transform both our lives and our world. So many texts concerning the Goddess are dry and academic renderings, void of any life or inspiration. "yogic Secrets" breaks this mold and shows us that the Goddess is waiting for us to hear Her voice and welcome Her into our hearts and minds. This text pulsates with Shakti and will awaken the Goddess within your Heart.

The Yogic Secrets of The Dark Goddess is both uplifting and inspiring. The author conveys her own personal journey which led her to experience the transformative power of the Dark Goddess Kali Ma. Shambhavi (author) provides a Tantric interpretation of Kali which is full of spiritual gems which follows in quotes that I have provided herein. She quickly defines Kali in her introduction as, "...the beginning and the end of everything. She has the first and the last word, as she is the Divine word in its primal essence before and beyond any particular expression. Kali stands before and after, below and above any mere human teacher, saint, prophet, guru or even avatar. Even Lord Krishna could only take birth after her descent! Kali holds all time, all beings and all dharma in her power. All that is sacred are but reflections of her lightning force linking all beings into a unity that is everywhere dynamic, transformative and overflowing."
Another interesting part of her introduction was when she discussed the symbolic nature of Kali requiring animal sacrifices. Here again is a quote expanding on the meaning of 108 buffalo heads being sacrificed to Kali to glorify her divine power: "Did Kali truly require the offering of buffalo heads? Or was it our heads, our ego form that Kali wanted at the sacrificial altar?...Animal offerings are only symbolic in the inner ritual, representing our lower passions and desires....The sacrifice embodies our own sadhana, the offering of our human self to the Divine. In the act of sacrifice, we surrender our ego head, becoming ourselves the sacrificial animal. The death of the animal shows us the fleeting nature of our ephemeral life wherein all experiences are momentary. Death is the gateway to all ultimate realizations of bliss and immortality."
