Book Description

September 17, 2002

Every day more and more people who are burned out from their exercise programs turn to yoga and Pilates. Traditional yoga focuses on breathing, flexibility, and quieting the mind, while Pilates matwork concentrates on strength and power from the center. But what if one program offered the best of both? Pilates and yoga instructor, dancer, and personal trainer Jonathan Urla has done just that by creating Yogilates™.

Fully illustrated with black-and-white photgraphs, Yogilates™ is perfect for those looking to improve their health and well-being with the latest, most effective mind/body exercise program.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Personal trainer and yoga instructor Urla has created (and trademarked) Yogilates, a fitness regimen that combines calming Hatha yoga with Pilates, a body alignment system developed by deceased posture guru Joseph H. Pilates. If the combo seems a bit complicated, it is, and Urla's how-to manual doesn't make it easier to understand. Lessons such as "how to establish the pelvis in a neutral position" or "how to lift the legs into you using the core muscles" might be manageable if it weren't for their hard-to-follow instructions. The remaining third of the book is devoted to advanced Yogilates. As in previous sections, Urla as well as chiseled yoga and Pilates teachers grimly illustrate the positions. But even Urla warns "not to proceed in haste." He also urges, in addition to thrice-weekly Yogilates sessions, aerobics three to five days a week. Ultimately, trying to follow Urla's fitness program is the real workout-and may inspire readers to unfurl their yoga mats just to relax. b&w photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Publishers Weekly is way off., October 8, 2002
By
Jonathan Urla (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yogilates(R): Integrating Yoga and Pilates for Complete Fitness, Strength, and Flexibility (Hardcover)
As the author of this book, I am responding to the Publishers Weekly review of my book on Yogilates. This reviewer must have never read any yoga or Pilates exercise books before if they can't manage to follow the simple instructions that I have presented in this book. Compared to most other mind/body fitness books, I wrote this book in a straight-forward way with clear and simple instructions even a total beginner could understand. Perhaps the reviewer doesn't want to have to think about breathing or alignment while exercising. Even so, these are easily followed (inhale during one move, exhale for the other). Moreover, there are several chapters before the exercises start that explain philosophical background, how to check your flexibility, and establish awareness of basic movements. These chapters will add to anyones' overall understanding of Yogilates and help prepare the reader for a safe and effective practice.
My hope is that people will ignore this reviewer's completely off base comments and see the book themselves. I feel I can safely guarantee that you will find it to be written in a user-friendly manner. And you will also find the photos and models to be clear and serene, not grim at all.
Thank you and Namaste,
Jonathan Urla, Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, October 8, 2002
This review is from: Yogilates(R): Integrating Yoga and Pilates for Complete Fitness, Strength, and Flexibility (Hardcover)
I have studied yoga for many years, and this book is one of the most informative and easy to read for me. It is laid out extremely well, and also extremely readable and easy to follow. It was particularly helpful in the beginning on how to breathe properly and how to test flexibility and alignment. Everything was easy to follow and I love the combination of both yoga and pilates. This is exactly the mind/body fitness system that I have been searching and I finally found it! A real winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars second to none, December 9, 2002

This review is from: Yogilates(R): Integrating Yoga and Pilates for Complete Fitness, Strength, and Flexibility (Hardcover)
this book is extremely well written and easy to follow for anyone who has the desire to learn pilates and/or yoga. while it is usually more effective to meet with an instructor, if the instructor isn't Jonathan, buy this book. having taken a workshop with the author, it would be difficult for me to be instructed by anyone else, therefore having this book to refer to is completely necessary. I encourage anyone who has the desire to do something that will give incredible results, to get this book and follow it several times a week. you will not be disappointed!
