French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre once defined Yohji Yamamoto's style like this: "For me, a woman in Yohji is like a nymphomaniac nun. His clothes are at once sensual and very ritualistic." This about a man whose reputation marks him as a designer of clothes for earnest intellectuals. This about a man whose 1998 "wedding" show featured a bridal striptease which took models from inflated Victorian crinolines down to slim-line dresses and pants. This about a man who is one of the most revered and idiosyncratic of 20th century designers. In Talking to Myself, Yamamoto has created an illustrated notebook that recounts the phases of his life. A work in progress punctuated with multiple images, Talking to Myself is the only book in which Yamamoto has become personally involved, making it a veritable extension of his own private world. In it, he "talks to himself" and with philosopher and art/fashion critic Kiyokazu Washida about himself and the objects he creates, objects that meld, blend with, and are assimilated by the person they seek to enhance. Pages marked by Yamamoto's pen and brush with Japanese ideograms, striking sketches, and abstract compositions help decipher his desire to achieve anti-fashion through fashion itself. Yamamoto's world is one of black and white symbols, a world in which color makes only a fleeting appearance.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin were born in Amsterdam in the 1960s, and have been collaborating in art, fashion and photography since the 1980s. Over the course of their careers, they have worked with Vogue, Visionaire, Artforum, Interview and the New York Times Magazine. Their commercial clients have included Vivienne Westwood, Louis Vuitton, Narciso Rodriguez and Giorgio Armani. Their work has appeared at the Guggenheim, the Musee de l' Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Venice Biennale.
Craig McDean was born in Manchester, England, in 1964. He studied photography in London, where he collaborated with i-D Magazine and The Face. He has since photographed campaigns for Calvin Klein, Chloe Yoji Yamamoto, Jill Sander, and Yves Saint Laurent. His work can also be seen in publications such as Vogue, Italian Vogue, and W Magazine. In 1999, he published a book of his fine art photographs, entitled I Love Fast Cars. He now lives and works in New York City.

He currently lives in Paris, photographs for Harper's Bazaar, and has led numerous publicity campaigns for such illustrious clients as Christian Dior, Cerruti, Valentino, Yves Saint-Laurent, and Comme des Garcons. His preference for shooting in the studio, using an 8-by-10-inch Polaroid, results in portraits that reveal an acute understanding of the history of photography.
David Sims is the official photographer for the U.S. edition of Harper's BAZAAR. His work has also appeared in L'Uomo Vogue, Vogue Homme International and The Face, and he has shot ad campaigns for such clients as Calvin Klein Jeans, Prada, Jil Sander, Louis Vuitton, Helmut Lang, Pepsi, and The Gap.
Peter Lindbergh, "the poet of glamour," was born in 1944. He lives in New York and shoots for numerous magazine and advertising clients.

He launched his own company in 1972 and showed his first collection in Tokyo. In 1981 he debuted in Parisand has been awarded the French Chevalier de L'Ordre des Art et Lettres, Yamamoto is also the recipient of the International Award given by The Council of Fashion Designersof America. He currently lives in Japan and relaxes by playing harmonica with a band called Suicide City.
