This album grooves, Nat and J.J. sound great together.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Yokohama Concert (Audio CD)
You know, I read some bad reviews of this album but I gotta say it rocks. Nat and J.J. sound sweet together, and the song selections are great. I especially like Nat's sound on Hummin' (you may remember this from the album 'country preacher'), there's just so much soul in that melody. As I understand it, this was J.J.'s first jazz recording in eight years and marked his return to the scene.

The Thrill Is Gone,

It made a lot of sense for J. J. to go to Nat Adderley as a frontline companion for this tour, since twenty years earlier this pair had achieved extraordinary chemistry on the Columbia LP, "J. J. Johnson in Person" (several of the tracks from this underrated but essential session are included on the collection, "Trombone Master"). The same frontline just doesn't jell on the Yokohama concert, with some sloppy execution on Nat's part being just one of the problems contributing to a disappointing recording.
